Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

Thanks. The only stage I was upset about was the one after high prone and I forgot to dial back to zero coming off the stage.

Big.....fat....zero.

Sigh. A zero really hurts one's ranking at the end of the day.

According to my wife, I am becoming "more imperfect human" everyday.

Ouch!

I’ve never shot an (official) match, just a bunch of buddies trying to have fun in the field/pasture. But I have forgotten to dial back… worse, I completely forgot to set the Zero stop, and still cranked it to where it stopped… ya… I hit the dirt 40 yards (plus) in front of the target… I was so frustrated I put my forehead on the mat next to the gun and just laughed hysterically…. Couldn’t believe what I just did.

I’ve taken a zero. It was my first time shooting the NRA AR Tactical class. I spent too much time fiddling with my gear and ran out of time. Actually it was 2 zeros, my last 2 shots.

At another match, had a guy in the lane next to me cross fire on my target, a perfect center X bullseye. I got his X and he got a zero.

You learn and live to fight another day.

Jeff and I shot the NRL-22 Finale today at Altus. The 5 NRL-22 stages and 7 PRS style stages, one went out to 350.

18 shooters, Jeff laced 5th, I placed 7th, so a good day for us. I flunked pics today, never even entered my mind until we were picking up targets.

Sigh.

Jeff got a couple, an old man getting low to the floor, showing his farmers tan. :D

At least somebody can get down into that position ... :)

My back with spinal stenosis, it's difficult to get prone, especially when I have to lift my head to look into the scope ... Ouch!

It's sitting down shooting at the table for me ... Or standing while point shooting walking around. When people ask why I stopped jogging/running, "I did several miles a day in my 20-30s after the Army ... I got jogging/running out of my system ... Like Forrest Gump". 😁

On the tires to the left I did go prone, it was lower, have the skinned elbow to show for it.

The block was high enough prone would be a stretch, where elbows and knees was very solid. Shot off a 5 gal bucket, the block, and the 55 gallon barrel. Cleaned it.

(Actually, one elbow, one arm on block, hand around bag with thumb on thumb rest)

Stretching gets more and more important with age. Move, move, move…..

Oh, and yes, it was faster too. Getting up from prone is getting more challenging.

Do they shoot as well as the Ruger Precision Rifle (AR 15), which has garnered a good reputation for accuracy, at least in its price range.

Any cons to them?

I ask because I am considering trying the PRS game (They have a place in my state) and they have a "production" class (Less than 2K rifle and less than 2K scope) division as well as a "senior" category.

Looks like the Savage GRS could be a viable option as well. Thoughts?

Any other options? Not ready for a 4K rifle (Drool) and 3K scope just yet, gotta start saving my pennies, plus find out if the game is for me. :)

Any and all insight is welcome. (Scopes too)
As a teen, I bought a Savage 110 in 30-06 and got handloading equipment. A sales guy at the local sporting goods store taught me how to handload and helped me buy the necessary equipment. I only had one centerfire rifle and that was a Savage mod. 110 in 30-06. My shooting buddy and his friend and I got together and all loaded '06 ammo for general purpose hunting. We hunted woodchucks for practice prior to deer season and got really good with the low-powered scopes we could afford. Mine was a Weaver 2.5X and I shot it pretty well, using 125 grain spitzers in my '06. My buddy had a 4X Weaver and he was also a good shot, having been in a .22LR target-shooting team. Being a target shooter he was more deliberate in shooting...sometimes losing opportunities due to being too deliberate sometimes. Having only a 2.5X scope on my Savage 110, it was a bit more difficult to shoot as accurately as my buddy, who had a 4X. Still, I got my share of chucks and crows.

Due to the practice on varmints, we were pretty good shots prone, sitting, and offhand. Sometimes we surprised ourselves by how well we could shoot with the under-powered scopes, until I read an article that explained the relative accuracy of open sights, receiver sights and scopes of various powers. Scopes were much more accurate, but there isn't much difference in accuracy among the various scope powers. The article was right, judging by the impressive distances we were able to kill woodchucks and crows.
