Many of the service grade M1 Garands at the CMP store have a fairly loose front sight. This has got to affect accuracy. The indexing ridge is sloppy in the barrel grove and it allows a little play.

Is there a standard fix for this (like peening the indexing grove?

Thanks,

Thanks Don,

That seeme dthe mos tlikely option. Is there a preferred method for doing the peening? Barrel or front sight?

No way of really peening the gas cylinder, which is what the front sight is mounted on. Just take a socket from a socket set, and lay it between each of the splines on the barrel and give it a moderate "rap" with a hammer.

Peen the barrel splines, its a arsenal fix.
I have gotten several Garands from CMP that the slines were peened

Use a hammer wedge with a flat or rounded face and a one pound shop hammer to peen the edges of the slot.
This produces a more uniform and better looking finish rather than using a punch. HTH
