Loudest gun you've been around or fired?

Let's face it, part of the fun in guns is the noise (so long as we have enough hearing protection so that it doesn't screw stuff over up there). There's just nothing like having a high-powered rifle, 12-gauge, or revolver and unleashing a massive BOOM!
What is the loudest gun you've either shot or been near when set off?

Hard to say, but these are the loudest I remember.

.257 Roberts out of a TC Contender pistol, using a brake
.50 BMG, single shot Barrett
.460 S&W, S&W M460XVR

That last one was *extremely* annoying. No way to shoot next to that guy without being deaf and in a partitioned stall. When he shows up I pack up and move.

Something similar happened to me just last week, except unfortunately there wasn't anywhere else to move to. I never actually saw what the guy was shooting due to the dividers, but I just plain couldn't shoot in the lane next to it. I consider myself pretty much able to focus through anything, but whatever it was every time he popped off a round I couldn't help but blink and flinch .. which was not making my own shooting very enjoyable.

Muzzle brake 7mm STW inside a brick wall partion shooting lane.
10ga browning gold to my left in a small blind was a real close second.
Had ear plugs in on the first, but was goose hunting on the second.

Stood next to a 50BMG. Boy did that guy clear the range out in a hurry.

The loudest I fired: 12guage accidental discharge indoors. I never understood how concussion grenades work until that happened.

Dead of night, middle of the pacific ocean.

It happened to be July Fourth and the BattleGroup commander wanted fireworks. Two cruisers and an aircraft carrier started pounding the ocean with anything larger than 3 inches. MarDet supplied the tracers for visual effect.

The Destroyer tailing us was a very impressive finale. Those guns were louder than 500lb bombs. Lit the sky with muzzle flash so bright you could see the horizon.

Definitely the S&W 500 at the indoor range. Yikes.
hehe our indoor range wont allow anything over .45

The loudest?
.270WIN without hearing protection :p

I didnt hear anything for about half an hour and had ringing in my ears for many many hours later :D

Some sort of snubby 44 mag. Guy at the range was shooting one. You never had to guess when he fired or where he was:what: :D

The receiving end of incoming artillery. I've been on both ends, I like the sending end better.

hmmm...toss up between the M2 .50 BMG, the MK19 40mm grenade launcher and the S&W 500, for guns I've fired.

for incoming its interesting, the mortar round thats was probably a 82mm round that landed less than 10 meters away from me on the other side of a T-wall barrier wasn't as loud as the one that hit a metal awning that was about 100 meters away, it was like a big drum, that one was wild. most of the controlled dets over here tend to be louder than incoming anyways.

Respectfully, I don't agree.

I carry my guns in my studio or out in the woods (where I prefer quiet).

I'll shoot them at the range, but I hate it when I'm shooting next to a .30-06.

Does the main gun on an Abrams tank count?
Yes. If we're going to shoot big ones, may as well go for big.

I'm with you on the sending end, bro.

Smith Trail Boss

3", Ported, .44 magnum. Never again will I shoot it without protection.

I don't know which was the loudest, but my doctor told me yesterday that a balance problem I have been having over the past few years was caused by shooting a weapon for years without hearing protection.......

Although I have no hearing loss like a lot of guys I worked with in the 60's and 70's, I do have a dizziness problem that can't be repaired....

I never go to the range without hearing protection now, but back in the day it was never even though of at the Police Range I went to monthly or sometimes weekly......

NEVER SHOOT WITHOUT EYE AND EAR PROTECTION !!!

Howitzers in the Army. M1 Tanks, M60 Tanks both of them have 105 mm. I was lucky enough to crew an M1 Tank and be the loader.:) . It was a thrill. Has this knee switch that accesses the rounds, the door slides with the knee switch. Pull one round of High Explosive, tip it over and slam it into the breech carefully and quick I might add. And
BOOM!
