May 1 - Illegal Immigrant Protest

"Immigrant" is a term that is widely used to include both illegal and legal immigrants.
Look closely, pay attention to who's speaking, and you'll see the one's who lump you in with the illegals are the ones against doing anything to stop illegal immigration, because they know if they get you thinking that the effort is "anti-immigrant" (which it's not) rather than "anti-illegal immigrant" (which it is), then they'll have your support as well.

Take my word for it, 99.99% of us see the distinction. Read magazine articles, and you'll see. As a matter of fact, here's a snippet of a research paper I'm writing:

The Nation, a left-leaning opinion magazine, contained in its April 24th edition an editorial on the issue of illegal immigration. The editorial contained the word “illegal” only once, in the following context: “cheap immigrant labor, vulnerable to exploitation because of its illegal status.” The word “immigrant” or “immigrants” appeared thirty times, including the title, but remarkably only once with a preceding adjective, “undocumented,” denoting status. The immigrants in question are also referred to as “the poor huddled masses” that Republicans are trying to keep out of the country. This reference to the poem inscribed on the Statue of Liberty is meant to equate the current wave of illegal immigrants to the many waves that entered through Ellis Island. In fact, the language of the entire editorial does the same, casting the debate as one about “immigration,” another term which appears without qualifiers. It describes anti-illegal immigrant advocates as “xenophobic” and “anti-immigrant.” While there are certainly a few on the anti-illegal side who are so because they fear or hate foreigners or non-whites, it is certainly not the motivation behind the entire ideology. However, if those in favor of extending further privileges to illegal immigrants can succeed in identifying their opponents in the minds of the undecided as “xenophobic” or “anti-immigration,” an indefensible position in today’s political climate, they will have effectively shut down debate.
The Nation editorial also is heavily sprinkled with terms designed to appeal to leftist individuals, words such as “economic equality” and “struggle for economic justice.” Democrats are unable to “light the way down a better path.” The word “movement” is used eleven times, invoking images of the glory years of “progressivism” and Marxist revolutionary movements around the world.
National Review, a right-leaning opinion magazine, contained in its April 24th edition an article on the issue of illegal immigration. In stark contrast to The Nation, this article by Kate O’Beirne heavily emphasizes the status of the people in question. The word “illegal” appears eleven times, and “illegal aliens” six times. The proposed immigration reform is repeatedly characterized as “amnesty.” The article uses such phrases as “violated our laws,” “strong enforcement,” and “cracking down” to maintain the law-and-order connection important to conservatives.

In my personal life I've noticed that my views are not widely held in high regard, because I'm not a "citizen."
And that is as it should be. A citizen's opinion in any country carries more weight than a non-citizen, yes? But you have the opportunity to become a citizen, which will immediately put you on the same level as any other citizen, and higher than many, because you will have worked, as you pointed out earlier, to earn it.

Shadizar:

Your post is problematic for several reasons.

1.
I am a legal immigrant to this country. I have my "green card" and served four years in the United States Marine Corps. Anyone that says I don't have a say, can kiss my ass! I earned my say, unlike those that were BORN here.

My ancestors fought on the losing side (British) of the American Revolutionary War, both sides of the American Civil War, with both the British and Americans in WWI, again with the British and Americans in WWII, and more recently with the Americans in Vietnam, both Gulf Wars, and two family members are currently deployed in the 'Stan--one for his second tour. Some were born here, some abroad, one on the boat on the way over. All those currently living are Americans by Mandate of Heaven (having been born in the US of A, it were an act of God, not man). We are not kissing anything. Not all members of my family are warriors--especially the women and children. You bet I find your remark offensive.

2. I can completely sympathize with those poeple who have entered this country illegaly (yup I said it!). They are people who came here looking for a better life for themselves and their children.
"Sympathize?" As in sympathize with those who knowingly and willfully break this sovereign nation's laws? Phrases to add to your lexicon: aiding and abetting; sedition; treason. Master those and then move on to "Hanoi Jane." "Completely sympathize." Spare me. :banghead:

3. IF, I had been in a situation where I could not feed myself of my family, I would have done the same. If put into that situation I don't think anyone else would do differently. In this country we have a luxuriuos life that many envy (for good reason).
Brilliant reasoning. The very pathology you advocate is the very same pathology you condemn as the driving force behind the "illegals'" (your terminollogy, not mine) mass exodus from their homeland and influx into my country. By your rationale, it is preferrable to cut and run rather than stand and fight for the betterment of one's own country. If this is representative of the level of loyalty, honor, and commitment I can expect from you and the people you are defending, then we are destined to clash. Succinctly stated: a man who would rather flee than stand and fight for his native land is not a man I can trust to fight for mine. Good to know you place your own selfish best interests and self preservation above all else. (someone please stick a needle in my eye)

4. This country has laws. I am very well aware of that. The laws as they are written do now work. As a country we allow people with skills to work within our borders at the expense of the middle class. These are engineers and computer specialists, not untrained and unskilled workers. Why is there no outcry about those jobs being lost? GM, Ford, Microsoft, etc, are all "outsourcing" and "downsizing" at the expense of the middle class. Why no clamor about that?
You are unfortunately and grossly misinformed. The hue and cry is deafening. As for decrying the major corporations, this is AMERICA; no one ever has or ever will OWE anyone a job. Free markets are just that: anyone is free to "make it or tank it." Research Andrew Carnegie, the Rockefellers, the Kelloggs, Henry Ford, Bill Gates, et al. Our government is a republic; ours is a capitalist economic system. The design incorporates an inherent incentive to work hard and prosper as a result therefrom. As for those who incessantly prate, snipe, and grouse over "outsourcing" and "downsizing" at the expense of the middle class," man, if you want to convince me then stop talking and do something tangible. Oh, before i forget, just one question: am I to understand, my Brother, that you came away from boot camp and four years in the Corps with this set of values and worldview?

5. While we focus on people that are barely earning enough to survive, we are ignoring the fact that skilled jobs are moving overseas.
GREAT! in that you seem to be speaking on behalf of everyone but me--I am most certainly NOT ignoring "the fact that skilled jobs are moving overseas"--i trust that YOU are going to start a company, offer all the paid bennies, far above the minimum wage, and jobs to all who want them. I applaud your benevolence. Please provide an address and map to El dorado so that I might personally drive the bus and deliver the first load of your new workers to you. Venture capitalists and entrepreneurs: gosh how I love you guys! BTW: you again refute your argument when you talk about skilled jobs leaving--isn't this the justification you use to defend your beloved downtrodden who FLEE TO THE COUNTRY WHERE THE GOOD JOBS ARE? Sorry, but you can't have it both ways--not even in America.

6. The 11 million illegal immigrants who are the targets of so much hatred are the very lowest rung on the economic ladder. These people are willing to work for pennies in jobs that for the most part do not take away from the middle class (if anything they keep the middle class afloat). I surely wouldn't do their jobs. They are no threat to me (or anyone I know).
HUH? (Chris Farley voice) Uh . . . um . . . do you remember that one time when you so said, "As a country we allow people with skills to work within our borders at the expense of the middle class. These are engineers and computer specialists, not untrained and unskilled workers? . . ." That was cool. And then you said, "They are no threat to me (or anyone I know)." Ya. Well that wasn't so cool because it didn't make a lot of sense. And while we are on the subject just who are these "anyones” of whom you speak? Must be some intriguing folks, they.

7. Health Care. Yes, illegal immigrants raise the price of health care (among other things), but in all honesty is anyone looking at the profits of these companies? Oil companies make a 9% profit margin in their industry while medical companies are making astronomical profits (on the order of 20%+). The country is in an uproar about gas prices, but there is no such interest in health care?!
Socialism. It's what's for dinner. Again, FOUND AND RUN YOUR OWN HEALTHCARE COMPANY! Make TONS of money, insure all your friends and anyone you want to for F-R-E-E nothing. Heck, you can even flat out REFUSE to insure me and my "not-worthy-by-virtue-of-having-been-born-in-America" relatives and never give any reason for so doing. It’s your right. Ain't America great! As for gas prices, YOU BE THE ONE TO COME UP WITH AN ALTERNATIVE TO FOSSIL FUELS! What an opportunity that is, eh? The oil companies no more have an obligation to come up with the "next" energy source than foundries have an obligation to come up with a replacement for structural steel. health care, gasoline, cars: it's what they do. Good grief. Will you please listen to your reasoning?

7. This country was built on immigration. Unless you are a Native American (which I am not-unless you count Central America-which no one does) then we are ALL immigrants. Times are tough, but to shut our doors to immigrants now, would be hippocracy.
Bull$*&^! This country was not "built on" immigration. THIS COUNTRY WAS BUILT ON IDEALS. (sorry for having shouted) Again, for the benefit of those with sensitive ears, America was founded and built upon an ideal. READ the Constitution and the Bill of Rights for chrissakes. I won't even dignify your ridiculous diatribe on Native Americanism: read your history books. There was no unified, homogenous "Native American Nation," ever. The woodland tribes most certainly did not get along with the Lakes and Plains tribes; the southwestern tribes did not get along with the prairie tribes; etc., etc., etc. Have someone educate you about the Anishinabe (Chippewa/Ojibway), Huron, and their friends [sic] the Iroquois. Now those guys knew how to party! As for "shutting our doors," the doors are open; the illegals (your term, not mine) are not using them. It's really disrespectful to enter your host's home by a means other than the door through which he's/she opens for you. There's never an excuse for bad manners. Period. "Hippocracy[sic]?" It's a disease found in large mudhole-dwelling mammals in Africa, right? (good grief)

8. Ellis Island did not reject your grandfathers (Native Americans not withstanding). The problems where different then, but they are not so different that we should isolate ourselves from immigrants now. They are, and always have been the lifeblood of this nation.
Uh . . . actually they did--in one case not once but TWICE. Where do you get your information? :) As for our "problems being different but not so different," you are quite right: the number of cases of TB, typhoid, measles, mumps, leprosy (can you believe that one; yes, LEPROSY!) are off the charts. This is in direct correlation to the number of--you guessed it--UNDOCUMENTED ILLEGAL ALIENS LIVING IN THIS COUNTRY. My kids are all up to date with their vaccinations--just like me (Ye-aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!). Unfortunately, there is no way to tell who these people are, where they are from, what underlying medical conditions they have, whether they have ever been to a doctor let alone immunized. . . . FWIW: My great grandfather GSM with the Buffs, was first quarantined and later rejected at Ellis Island because he had not fully recovered from his bout with malaria, which he had contracted while serving in Her Majesty's service in Egypt. As for the "lifeblood of this nation," well . . . them's fightin' words, son--especially coming from you. I say you are no longer welcome to play in the sandbox until you learn to control that tongue.

Now, any English 110 student can tell you that a good essay always comes back to where it began--a nice tidy circle. To that end, you qualified your inaccurate litany by stating the following:
I am a legal immigrant to this country. I have my "green card" and served four years in the United States Marine Corps.

Well, son, this is your lucky day. I, too, am a former Marine.

Perhaps it would be productive for you to go back and digest the things you have put into print for all the world to read--yes, there is indeed a reason it is called the World-Wide Web. And then, my wayward "Brother," put on your Dress Blues, run your hand down that crimson stripe representing the blood of each and every Marine who has gone before you--including my great grandfather who fought with the 3/6 at Belleau Wood and Soissons, my brother who was with the 1/9 3rd at Khe Sahn in '67, and my brother in law who is on his second deployment to Afghanistan--each and every Marine who counts on you to uphold and defend at all costs the values of the Corps and this Nation. And then, look in the mirror and recite the sacred oath you once took:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely; and without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter; So help me God.

Now, if you feel our laws, as set forth and based upon the Constitution of the United States of America, are unjust, then run for office, win, go to DC and legislate change. Otherwise, be a productive citizen and obey and uphold the laws that make America America.

This is the way it works. There are no other options—other than leaving. Choose ONE.

(Good night, Chesty!)

I am no wayward brother. I only ask to speak my mind. My view differs from yours (and others). It takes all kinds to make a whole. What makes us different from "them" ? I am only a small step from being an "illegal."

"All enemies foreign and domestic." I see no enemy.

Agreed: "a whole."

The French have a word for that literary device.

OOH-RAH!

It' has begun!!!

Many of the radio stations here are broadcasting in Spanish right now.

Of course many of them broadcast out of Tijuana anyway.. I think the DJs and everyone have taken the day off.

EDIT: BTW, I too am a former Marine and I agree with much of what Shadizar says. He makes a lot of sense.

On the "jobs white Americans won't do" note...

How many illegal immigrants are there cleaning toilets in Alaska? Maine? Hawaii?

" the jobs Americans won't do"
Yes, all those jobs in construction, manufacturing, grocery stores, retail sales, restaurants, warehousing and distribution, airplane mechanics, (remember the illegal airplane mechanics busted in NC a couple years ago?), commercial fisheries, logging, etc.
Americans hate doing those jobs. Especially the ones that used to pay reasonably well until the influx of illegal labor distorted the wage scales.

Get off your high horse. Nobody is saying close the borders to ALL immigrants. We are saying secure the borders against ILLEGAL immigrants.

Nice try for an emotion-based appeal.

Oh, and since I was born here, I'm native American, despite my forebears being Scots-Irish and German.

Shadizar:

f you are indeed as you say, a legal immigrant, you know that you are welcome and receive all bennefits of American citizenship but If someone broke into your house and demanded, demanded not ask, that you provide them and thier family with an education, health care and take care of them in their old age, would you not be just a little bit pissed off? WEll my friend that is exactly what the illegals are demanding of this country.

They are just as it says "illegal" and should be gathered up and deported to whince they came. :neener: Therr should be no place in this country for but ONE flag, and ONE allegience. :D

Ummm... not to nitpick but genetic findings show Native Americans as
immigrants as well. The earliest peoples here were travelers from Asia.
Open immigration was how things were done. But there are laws
now on how it is done. The laws are there for a reason.

As for
jobs white Americans won't do
if the pay scale,
conditions, and benefits were brought up to par with areas that do not have
a cheap illegal workforce, more "white Americans" would be willing to take
those jobs. The employers can get away with the sub-par standards only
because they have a work force willing to put up with it.

There is also plenty of Americans that would be happy to have any job.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/04/29/day.labor.ap/index.html

David Peters, a 37-year-old salesman, is bothered by illegal immigration and believes he's part of the problem, but he says it isn't always possible to hire people with work papers.

BS.

He hired day laborers over several months while remodeling his Hermosa Beach house. One man tiled a floor and installed a granite countertop for $1,000, jobs that Peters estimated would cost $5,000 if he used the Yellow Pages.

So what he's really saying is that he doesn't want to pay fair
market value to a legal immigrant or permanent citizen. I wonder
how David would feel if he was replaced by someone who would
do his job for 1/5 of his pay?

Surely David is far too important and unique in his industry to be replaced.

"I know if they didn't have a job, they wouldn't be here," said Peters. "But we all shop at Target and Wal-Mart, and all their stuff is made overseas with cheap labor."

No, we don't.

Well, two of our Hispanic employees are no call no show by more than an
hour.
Sad thing is unless you kick someone in the beanbag at this place you won't
get written up.

Organizers have timed the action for May Day, a date when workers around the world often march for improved conditions, and have strong support from big labor and the Roman Catholic church. They vow that America's major cities will grind to a halt and its economy will stagger as Latinos walk off their jobs and skip school.

I found this photo . . .
flags.jpg

In the former Soviet Union[May1] became a national festival of communist kitsch as the Red Army preened on parade and the party faithful proclaimed the new order." [my italics].

And then there is this one . . .
russia.jpg
Under communism, May Day was a celebration of the Soviet Union. Today, much has changed: the military parade in Red Square has been replaced with crowds of pensioners and the underemployed, demanding higher wages and more social guarantees amid nostalgia for Soviet times
In all fairness to the "organizers," I can see the appeal. Not only do they share the now defunct and failed ideal their former CCCP bretheren, they also have a kindred musical interest.

(Nice accordian, eh?)

The flag works, too: hammer represents the construction trades; the sickle represents the farm workers--of course it also represents the the benefits illegals reap without making the investment of citizenship. Who says you "gotta pay if you want to play?"

And then there is this one . . .
germany_02.jpg
Policemen block the Oranienstreet in Berlin Kreuzberg while a leftist protester remonstrates with them

And this one. . .
germany_01.jpg
About 5,000 people demonstrated in the streets of Berlin in a protest against a ban of the main anti-capitalist May 1 demonstration, which regulary led to riots in previous years.

And . . .
germany_05.jpg
A police water canon sprays stone-throwing protesters in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg

Ah . . . Berlin. The old stomping ground.

And then there is . . .
brit_04.jpg
Police using horses and vans block off the shopping mecca of Oxford Circus in central London, a main target for anti-capitalist protests. Some 6,000 police officers were drafted into the capital to police the day's demonstrations

And this one. . .
1.jpg
Protesters gather in Oxford Circus during the May Day protests in central London. The protest, dubbed the May Day Monopoly based on the board game, brought many demonstrators to the streets of the capital to protest against global capitalism and environmental problems.

Ah yes, but please do remember, "There will always be an England. . . ."

As far as "news you can use" from the former seat of the Confederacy, I am happy to report that 0927 1 May 2006 finds not a cloud in the sky, the Stars and Stripes proudly waving from one porch column and the USMC flag is doing the same from the opposite column; the lawn crew is working down the street; the framers are roughing in the house just up the street.
Apparently, they are legal and/or have learned the beauty and value of capitalism and the free market economy.

Now . . .

am I going to do something special for May Day? You bet. 1 May is my intelligent, beautiful, and absolutely charming wife's birthday, who incidentally, is the daughter of Filipino immigrants, both of whom legally emmigrated to the US decades ago, both of whom as young adults learned the English language, both of whom became naturalized American citizens, both of whom are retired career military (USCG and USAF; USHS), parents who raised three American-born (Cleveland/San Antonio/DC) children on bases all over the world, three children who earned appointments to and graduated from the USNA, children who became commissioned officers, have families and kids and mortgages and commitments and responsibilities of their own . . . and continue to proudly serve their country both at home and on foreign shores.

You have to love that. :D

It is humbling to be a part of this family. I should be so "American."

im mexican, and im proud to be. im not from mexico though. I think that if the people from mexico want to be over here then they can as long as they're looking for work. If they arent then i think they should leave cause thats really all that they want. If the "president" will let the people who bombed us own some of our ports then i think that he should let the mexicans come over here. He was helping them do so, but he started doing to immagration thing. To me all this is stupid, we have all different kinds of races here and if hes gonna do that to them, i think he should kick everyone else out. In my opinon, it looks like hes being racisist in a way. He was good at first, now he turned to...... I just hope that all this can get resolved pretty soon. I hate this, we're pretty much starting another war over here.

as for doing jobs Americans don't want i do any job that pays me money. my grandmother and grandfather worked as migrant workers picking fruit and vegetables going all around the country working in many different places yes this means that they picked cotton. as for doing it now my grandfather works on a ranch and grows fruit for the ranch. I have an uncle that does construction and my soon to be father in law builds roads. i my self have black toped a couple of roads in my day. there are people to do the jobs but when illegals come in here and do the work for next to nothing then it only hurts the workers the bosses make more money cause the illegals are cheaper.
and i to liked Bush at he beginning of his term but it seems that he is to soft of these law breakers if i speed i get a ticket if i kill someone i go to jail laws are laws just because i don't like them doesn't mean that i can break them i don't like the laws on full auto so if i go buy on a street corner and get caught that means i broke the law and i promise they would not hesitate to put me in jail.

/* Succinctly stated: a man who would rather flee than stand and fight for his native land is not a man I can trust to fight for mine.*/

That is the single most important sentence ever stated in any of the ongoing debates I have heard or read. Brilliantly stated, I give you six stars and two thumbs up!!

what I want to know is why the cops aren't there to arrest every single one of the protestors who is here illegal. Seriously it should be fish in a barrel day. That cattle have hearded them selves. GO PICK THEM UP.

that is what i was thinking the ni was watching the news out of austin news 8 and a mexican came on adn said he could not believe that he was singeled out to b checked for a green card becasue he was hispanic and that it was racial profileing i almost fell over but the even sader part is they gave him air time for this despreat plea for attention and i have to say i owuld really like to arrest a few my self i can personlly think of about 10 poeple i know that are illegal and i even know places that employ them. yet nothing is done and i happen to know that for a fact the immagrotion has been informed of these places that hire them. and still nothing is done to stop it...

I say this is a great time to round up the illegals. Fingerprint them and send them back to mexico. Then tell all the illegals that crossed the border illegally you can never become a citizen. If they're caught here again it should be a felony(hence the reason for the fingerprints)I would be in favor of a hefty tax increase to build more prisons if need be.

"They will do jobs we don't want to do" Who do they think did those jobs before they came and took them from us in the name of "minority"workers.
Just a load of :barf: :barf: :barf:
