May be getting a Mini-14

I'd save up for an AR if at all possible.
There it is... somebody finally said it :neener:

I have THREE AR15's, and I STILL want a Mini-14... In fact that's what I'm giving my son for his 14th birthday in July.

If you "need" a hundred 30 round mags to defend your home from hoards of attacking zombies, get an AR15, NO DOUBT! But if you're happy with the traditional styling and SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER INVESTMENT that a Mini-14 has to offer, GO FOR IT!

Most any Mini-14 CAN BE a very decent shooter with a little reading, some TLC, and no more than $75 in trigger jobs, stock bedding, and a muzzle brake which STILL puts them a couple hundred less than my AR's.

If you like it, GET it.

I own a Mini-14 stainless and a BM 16'" A3 M4. I enjoy shooting both, but the BM is my favorite.

Well I've heard that Ruger discourages shooting steel cased ammo through the mini 14 and 30. The extracter breaks or something.

They do indeed. Had it happen to me (lacquered case Wolf, circa 2001. I've read that Wolf makes them differently now.). The parts (three parts, because it's for darn sure the plunger and spring are going to vanish away when the extractor breaks) are cheap, but you're done shooting that gun for the day.

Accurate? Maybe. My current best:

(50 yards, aiming for the bottom of the black. Stock Mini, amateur glass bedded stock, Millet peep sight. Handloads. And 49 year old eyes. Every so often I have a good day. :) )

To answer your original question, they handle cheap ammo like Wolf, and Silver Bear just fine, that all I shoot in mine...
