Last December, I purchased an 1892 Deluxe Takedown in .45 Colt that had to be immediately returned to Winchester for both cosmetic and mechanical problems. This rifle was returned twice and was eventually “junked” and replaced. When I received the replacement rifle, it had cosmetic problems and is now back at Winchester for repairs. I have now owned two samples of this rifle for about a year, never got to shoot one as it continues to live at the Winchester repair facility.
I just purchased an 1886 Short Rifle Takedown in 45-70 that arrived yesterday - guess what, it also has to be returned for a chip in the butt stock and the pistol grip cap being drilled way off center (the cap hangs off one side of the grip and has proud wood for about 1/8” on the other side). I had to ask myself - do they really look at these things before they ship them?
The balance of the rifle is perfect and has very nice wood but, it has to go back. Every time I call Winchester, I get no argument - they will fix it but I continue to own their product that lives at their repair facility - so back this one goes now.
As a side note, this 1886 is a brute of a lever action - one hefty piece of iron.
Anyway, am I just unlucky or has Miroku lost their manufacturing magic?
