Mom and Dad were robbed last night

I think you got the basics - alarm, a safe that bolts down, and lockboxes for the guns that are screwed to furniture or the wall. It won't keep them out, but the alarm will limit their time in the house.

Add motion lights to all doors and at the corner of the house.

This situation is a powerful argument for concealed carry. I just started a few months ago and wonder why it took me so long, even though I have had the license for years. I can't even tell I have the holster on now. The wife has her own pistol now and we shoot IDPA together. Hopefully she will start carrying in the next year.

Jeff White and Tecumseh beat me to it. DO NOT interfere with an ongoing investigation. 'Nuf said.

Concentrate on preventive measures ASAP. The thing is, whoever burglarized your parents in the first place may now have plans to come back and get the stuff they didn't have the time or resources to carry off the first time. They know it's there, they know where it's located in the house, and they know they got away with it the first time. It happens all the time. :banghead:

Your said you live in West Palm which is in Florida, and FL is shall issue so can't you get your mom a CCP.

Getting your private space sucks, been there. I'm sorry for your parents loss.
I've got a complete security system, including cameras.
It didn't stop the last invasion, grab and run. It did awake me and allowed me time to arm and catch the on foot teif running down the drive. It would have been an easy shot. I refrained.
It did catch the perp. on film coming and going, me with gun in hand in the drive in my shorts.
Later that day an arrest was made from the camera I.D. Wasn't his first.
So the security system is old hat I won't repeat it.
Congrat's to all contributors, this is one of the first threads i've read that didn't turn into a pissing contest on how to kill someone.

Move your parents for a while... make it obvious that they are on a long vacation... leave a stack of delivered newspapers in the drive... junk mail piling out of the mailbox... security lights and all lights inside off... note on the door that says "gone to mexico for the next 2 weeks, be back soon"

Wait inside with a shotgun.

Yeah, setting up an ambush is a good idea . What happens if you don't get the right badguys? This is the Strategies and Tactics Forum. We have rules about keeping the discussion real. It would take a team of people to execute your plan. Sorry it just doesn't pass the realism test...

And that is why I have a gun safe weighing 800 lb (without the guns.) I would not keep money, especially lots of money, around the house. And the guns you keep loaded need to be very well hidden.

As long as you don't have a bunch of children running around, try this:

Hollow books, nails under the kitchen sink for a revolver to hang by the trigger guard, false head boards, desk with extra room behind the drawers, velcro under the living room lamp stand for a light weight auto (keltec .32s are wonderful for this.) Make sure you have a few good small flashlights hidden to, and maybe a pepper spray cannister here and there (I like the new Kiimber LifeAct for that.) You can velcro the pepper spray anywere you want!

Oh, and do keep records of your guns serial numbers, with photos, well off site! Maybe even bury a sealed box with the records somewhere on your property.

Not trying to be insensitive, but this is a great example of how most people don't consider doing anything to protect themselves until they're unlucky enough to have been forced into victimhood.

Most people are under the assumption that if my doors are locked and the house looks occupied then they're reasonably safe from being burglarized or ,worse, robbed. It will happen to someone else.
Closing the gate after the horse runs off has been a saying for hundreds of years so protecting yourself after a burglary is pretty common. I hesitate to call it naive and it's certainly not stupidity. I believe it to be the trusting nature of people......... until a burglary. Then some of the trust gets vaporized.

Might be a good time for your parents to get a dog. They are great for home defense when your not around or not awake. That $500 could probably buy one hell of a nice German shepherd or similar large, intimidating and protective dog.

As long as they reported it to the Police it will turn up. My dad's .380 was stolen and 10 years later it showed back up when someone tried to pawn it! Yeah of course he sold it but still it showed back up. If the kids filed the SN# off of it then no one would take it but at least your folks are doing the legal things necessary to keep them from being held liable for a robbery...or worse.
