Your opinions/experiences please. I am looking for the most accurate semi-auto in both .223 and .308. So for $3000.00 or less what two rifles would you buy?

a $1000 Ar15 with a $2000 red dot/scope :neener:

or...a good AR15 plus acessories, then the remainder for either a bonafied SVD or G3/FAL if I could find one.

too bad I dont have enough money for anything like that though

I'd buy an Armalite AR-10 20" with a Nighforce 2-10x

comes to bout 3 grand

then hopefully there's money left over to shoot it

The AR platform is about as accurate as you'll get in a semi-auto these days.

An AR-15 and one of the 308 AR types would do you.

What he said. For $2k you could buy a new .308 AR, plus a 5.56/.223 AR-15. Then spend the rest on optics, accessories, etc.

You used the words "accurate" and "semi-auto" in the same sentence...

If you want accuracy, don't get hung up on tacticool semi-autos. You can buy a -fair- semi-auto for that money. Or you can buy a pretty decent bolt-action, that'll likely shoot a LOT better.

Do you want accuracy, or do you want a big magazine? Remember - if you want to KEEP accuracy, you're not gonna want to overheat your barrel, and you're going to want to clean it frequently.

I have a basic bushmaster in .223 and with reloads I can get the occasional 0.75" (0.6" best) group but it averages 1" at 100yrds. I have more accurate bolt guns in .308 and .30-06. Timney triggers, bedded and so on. I guess this comes from seeing "Future Weapons" a knights m111 i think seemed like it could give my .308 ruger a run for it's money. I see all these adds for DPMS/Armalite/Bushmaster/Knights/sig 556/FAL and so on. Just have no experience with any. Don't want to trust mag ads. So wondering what real shooters have that they are happy with. Thanks.

Thanks untainted will research Armalite.

Thanks skinewmexico will read up on White Oak.

Thanks Bogie don't plan on wasting ammo. This is really academic as I don't have a "NEED" for these two guns but..... you know how it is.

RP88 will read up on the SVD or G3/FAL

Figure if the dems get the office we can expect a repeat of the Clinton ban so I plan on buying mags over the next few monthes.

I can only speak about a .308 autoloader. The DPMS LR 308 rifles have a reputation of being sub MOA shooters from many if not most of their owners. Using good handloads, my LR 308B (18" bull barrel) shoots consistent 3/4" 10 round groups. From what I learn from the AR 15 variant forum, this performance is quite common to the point that it is considered to be normal.
The performance in mine at least, is from a box stock rifle. It was ordered directly from DPMS with only a JP trigger upgrade. (A trigger upgrade is virtually mandatory as the stock triggers are horrible)
The old wives tale that in order to get good accuracy, you must use a bolt rifle or spend large amounts of money on an M1a has been thoroughly debunked by the performance of the modern AR platform.

I couldn't agree more. One needs only look at competition shooters in a class where you can shoot anything. AR's rule the roost to say the least. They are quickly adding special classes for the M1's and M1a's so they don't go away from competitions. No offense to any M1 or M1a owners. They are fine rifles in their own right.

gga357;
I don't know, I ordered the rifle from DPMS with the JP trigger already installed at the factory.
However, from looking at the JP installation instructions that were shipped with the rifle, it appears that the installation is not a drop-in. I would estimate that it is an installation that could be done by anyone that is careful, can follow instructions exactly and is at least familiar with working on firearms.
There are quite a few manufacturers that produce drop-in triggers assemblys for AR rifles. The many experienced folks on this forum can surely direct you to some of them.

I don't think an FAL is the most inherently accurate of the 308 semi-autos (main battle rifles); I think that would be the M14/M1A, by far (even over the HK's).

Colt HBar's from the ban period can be found for under $1000 in most cases, and are quite accurate. you just have to learn to live without a flash suppressor.

one of my big beefs with 308 AR's is that there are different magazine requirements for each brand. what a hassle. M1A mags (good ones) are expensive, but at least they're widely available.

I think AK-platform rifles have their virtues, but I don't think accuracy is one of them. even PSL's aren't known for MOA accuracy.
