I got a Czech vz-24 8x57mm Mauser from JGSALES.COM a few weeks ago. It costed me just over 220 bucks with shipping and a FFL transfer fee. It works great but could use a restoration but I don't want to spend 300 plus bucks to get it done. I was able to take it out shooting twice now. The range is 39 miles one way so it will be rare when I can take it out to shoot it. Since I didn't like the accuracy of it at 25 yards I ordered a scout scope for it. I still need to buy a case for it and I probably will just buy a clap on bi pod for it to. I'm just a target shooter that enjoys being as accurate as I can. I only like big caliber rifles so a 17hmr and a 22 caliber is out of the question for me for target shooting.

If the rifle is not grouping decent at 25y I doubt a scope will do much for it. Though the sights are not designed to be used that close it. Push it out to 100y or so and see what happens. And keep in mind that straight bolt may not clear a scope mounted over the receiver. Any if you are already having issues with accuracy do not clamp a bipod to barrel. That will only make it worse.Try to float the barrel in the stock if you can and mount the bipod to the stock.

Ok. Thanks for the tips. I didn't know about the factory sights and I won't but a bi pod on the barrel. I just ordered a shoulder sling and case for it to now. It's a scout scope I ordered. It will go where the rear sight is. So I won't have issues with my bolt rubbing it. A scout scope package deal was the best and cheapest way for me to go. That ran me just over 166 with shipping. I don't want to put allot of money into this gun. I spent way to much money on guns and stuff down through the years so I am sick of dumping allot of money to guns and stuff. I don't want to buy a spotting scope so I can set my scope for 100 yards. I might see if someone at the range could spot me with theirs so I can set my scope for 100 yards with their help.

Maybe I will put a picture link up of it when I'm done with it. But it is in rough condition. It needs to be restored but I don't want to pay for it.

What kind of mount did you get? I have a VZ-24 I don't yet have a mount for (but already have the scope!).

A very light sanding w/ ~150 grit and a good soak in towels w/ mineral spirits will remove whatever finish and grime is on it; from there you can steam out the dents if you like, and whatever finish for the look you want. I find polyurethane fills the pores beautifully and really protects.

It isn't hard to strip the stock and refinish it. There are several threads on this forum that go into detail. If you wanted to do the metal too, there are threads for that also. Duracoat and Alumahide are just two of several firearm specific products. Honestly, it will probably cost you less than 50 bucks in materials to strip the stock, steam out the dents, sand, and apply a finish.

Col. Plink, the S&K mounts are fantastic. they'll shoot loose if you don't use some sort of thread locker though.
Carlsako, vz's are great. give yours a chance and find some ammo it likes. Mine has fast become my favorite rifle for hunting and the range (well, if my range ever opens again).

Is that one of those Romanian "Instructie" red-band marked rifles? How are those, mechanically? I've always been under the impression that any rifle slated specifically for instruction would be inferior or considerably more worn than a regular combat issue arm, and have neglected to buy any as a result.

As for rifle cases, if yours is a long-barrel Mauser (around 4 feet long), I recommend this case:

I just got that case for my Turk and it fits like a glove.
The VZ's are carbine-length Mausers at around 43 inches, so that might be a bit much for it. However for the price it seems like a pretty nice soft case; makes me wish I ordered one for my Mosin. Perhaps I'll bookmark it for the eventuality of getting an M38 Turk of my own.

I had been using a basic shotgun case for my Mosin, and it fits rather tightly. This is a much nicer case. It's taller, fits better with the protruding bolt handle, and has both a shoulder sling and a zipper pouch. It's just a much nicer setup overall. The sling is invaluable when you're going to the outdoor range and have your hands full of equipment.

Well the scope, mount, rings and caps turned out to be back ordered. So I decided to just cancel that order. I think it might be a ati brand scout scope mount. I'm not sure. It comes in a package on combathunting.com. 149 before shipping. It is their best scout scope/mount combo. Here is a link to it. http://www.combathunting.com/product.cgi?group=191&product=15512 My shoulder sling and case was shipped yesturday. It's red banded yes but not marked on the gun instructie. This rifle blows away the mosin nagant 91/30 I used to own. I'm not that good with guns so I'd rather have a professional restore it. Here is a link of where I got the gun from and what it looks like basically. It is much rougher looking in person though. http://www.jgsales.com/product_info...tructie-marked/cPath/209_217/products_id/2811
Pick one up. They are a steal.

I just got to take it out shooting for the 3rd time today. I bought a spotter scope so I can see good at 100 yards. I shot maybe 10 rounds or so off at 100 yards while the rifle was on a table. I was using 150 grain military surplus ammo. I tried setting the rear sight to different heights but allI managed to get was 1 shot at 100 yards. I was shooting at a 24x45 black silouttee target. It hit high on the right leg of the target. But only went half way into the target.

So next I went down to the 50 yard range.I still had it on a table I couldn't hit anything even when I changed the rear sights elevation. So I then took it down to the 25 yard range. I had it on a table and the rear sight at the 5 setting. I could not get even 1 dead bullseye at 25 yards with it on a table. 2 bullets came close to the bullseye though. When I got good with the sights I was getting 9s on the target most of the time but no bullseyes. I will post the result picture links in my next 2 posts.

Is my gun suppoused to be that piss poor of a shot? Or is the barrel messed up on my gun? Please give me your comments. I need help. If you have a mauser just l like mine please respond.

How experienced are you with shooting...? At 25 yds even the Prvi ammo has wildly large groups; are you sure you aren't flinching and the problem isn't the rifle? I have never heard of a rifle that was so bad that it couldn't even hit a man-sized target at fifty paces; if the condition of the weapon was so bad you probably would have noted it by simply looking down the barrel with a flashlight. Also, why are you setting the range to 500 meters? Remember that the minimum sight graduation is 300 meters, and that you'll have to aim low since shooting at such a short distance will put your groups high (about ten inches high at 100yds, I think, since I shoot my VZ on a six-o-clock hold).

I remember I used to shoot a .357 at a 7 yard target, and I ended up shooting the wooden structure that the target was on and barely hit the paper because I was flinching so bad. When my stepbrother took the weapon from me, he drilled six shots grouped all within the center area, which demonstrated to me that my shooting was in error and not the weapon.

Have you inspected the bore to see how sharp the lands and grooves are? What's the condition of the muzzle? Perhaps you should try slugging the barrel; maybe it's possible that it's been worn from all the shooting, as it was an instruction piece and probably saw its fair share of abuse.

A friend has a really nice Czech VZ-24 that somebody must have already restored.
None of my gun friends/buddies do any permanent alterations to classic milsurps.

The friend bought a rear mount with a short LER scope from Amazon a few months ago, for about $ 60.
His scope mount is designed to avoid any drilling/cutting etc.

Have also read/heard that a "B Square" mount might work on some Mausers, to avoid changing the military character.

It shoots to high at 25 yards when the rear sight is set at 3. So I put it at 5 for 25 yards. I'm no gun smith so I don't know how in spect a gun right. When I got it a gun smith used a go and no go tool on it. It worked fine on both tests. I cleaned it out and the barrel looked fine inside from what I could tell.

The sights are calibrated for 100 yards, minimum. If it's shooting high, you want to take it DOWN, not UP. At 25 yards, you're going to get some weird results because of the way rifle sights are calibrated. You need to be at 50+ yards for it to start working right.

Thanks Warden. I do think now that it's just me. Because I did manage to get almost 2 bulleyes on 1 target. I doubt I will restore my gun. I want to but it's to much money. I'll probably just buy a scout scope and a clap on bi pod because I haven't been able to find one that just fits right on my stock without mods. I need to clean my gun out today if I am feeling good enough. I put like 62 rounds through it yesturday. That baby was hot. Lol. But it got so windy it took me hours to shoot off all the rounds. I had to wait for the wind to die down to place shots. Sometimes the wind was like a little breeze. Because I didn't want to wait for the wind to stop all together. It was taking way to long.

The wind wasn't a issue on the 100 and 50 yard range but when I got to the 25 yard range it became a issue. That range only goes up to 100 yards. It's really far though. 39 miles one way. I'vew only been out there with my gun 3 times since I bought it since the range is so far away. There isn't no other range near by I can shoot that rifle.

I shot my Turk at 25 yards on the indoor range, but I knew what I was doing. I was regularly hitting bullseyes. I'm not great with iron sights, and absolutely awful doing any type of precision shooting while standing. I could tell she was a fine shooter, though. Next outdoor range trip, she's going with me.
