Naming Guns

Only a few of mine have any name...... The Glock 19 regularly gets referred to as "Gaston" ; ( as in; "Gaston and I are going somewhere today). The .25-06 Ruger Mod. 77 sometimes gets called " Lucky" because I won it in a gun raffle. The Kimber sporterized Mod. 96 Swedish Mauser is always called "The Swede" to differentiate it from the other two Mod. 96's here, but it's the only one that's been sporterized. The 12 ga., fully rifled, scoped 870 slug gun is AKA " Thumper". IMG_0132.JPG KM77VTMKII.jpg IMG_1885.JPG IMG_0159.JPG L. to R. : "Gaston"..... "Lucky"......" The Swede".... & "Thumper".

Well, not really. We distinguish between my Mini 14 and my father's by the model number (I.e. 181 vs. 182) but that's about as far as it goes.

I'm laughing at some of these. If I did choose to name a gun, I would avoid giving it a woman's name. I don't think my wife of 35 years would appreciate it if I told her I was going anywhere (range, field, woods) with "Betsy."

They already come with names. Example- Ruger Redhawk.
No point in naming it a second time.

Last firearm I named was my service rifle at Basic Training. Simply because I had to. Her name was Nicole.

My M16A4 was Kaytlin, probably for a similar reason to yours being Nicole.

Of course, at that point I was also wearing birth control glasses with medical tape around the bridge with "KILL" written in permanent marker on it, so there's that.

I got a Remington 870 named "Old Blue."

The name comes from that movie the Christmas story. Ralphie, the stories main character has a dream about taking out bandits with his Red Rider bb gun that he calls "old blue." I loved that movie so much as a kid that I named my shotgun old blue and still call it "old Blue" to this day.

The biggest difference between then and now is that Old Blue was a hunting gun when I was a kid, and now it has a 7 round extended magazine, a 20" smooth bore slug barrel with open sights, and steel but plate. Old blue retired from hunting and became a peacemaker.
Ok Black Bart... Now you get yours.
Love Christmas story. One of the best movies ever!

My guns already have names, Ruger SP101, S&W 28-2, etc. I have so many that I'd never remember the name I gave them, so I refer to them as what they are. So much easier that way.

My .243 is either called that or 700BDL. In fact, most of my guns are referred to by their manufacturer or their caliber.
Ruger Single Six .22 - Single Six,
Marlin .22 bolt action - Marlin .22,
Marlin .22 Mag bolt action - Marlin .22 Mag,
Keltec PMR-30 .22 Mag - the PMR,
Astra Constable .380 - Astra or .380,
Ruger 10/22 - 10/22,
Ruger GP-100 .357 - GP-100 or .357,
Marlin 1894 lever action (.357) - 1894,
"Junior" Colt .25 ACP - Colt .25,
Norinco National Match AK - the AK,
Mossberg 500 12 ga. - "Mossy",
Stevens 311 SxS 12 ga. - Stevens,
plus three others that are retired either due to mechanical problems or intrinsic value. They don't get used.

at that point I was also wearing birth control glasses with medical tape around the bridge with "KILL" written in permanent marker on it, so there's that.

Ah, BCGs! Gotta love them. So, went through boot camp at 18, many years in uniform, I'm in my 40s and the eyes finally start going south. Had enjoyed 20/20 or better for my whole life. So, I'm on Active Duty orders and go see an eye doc, yep, the 40s caught up with me. So, they open the drawer of what the military will cover for glasses and there are the newer version of the BCGs. Given, that at that point in my life, I'm already married, have my one kid and second on the way - and no others planned - I actually selected the BCGs! Imagine that! Maybe I should find them and stick a piece of white tape on them!

How can I represent the Nerd laugh online?

I’ve never actually named any of my guns. However, I acquired a S&W model 19-3 a few years ago that was refinished. Instead of blue, it was refinished in black with chrome plated hammer and trigger. It had black rubber grips and came with a black leather holster. Everything black except the hammer and trigger! Since it also had a loose ejector rod, I refer to it as my Batman Special.

No names for my firearms.... my wife did name my Ruger SBH "Ole Smokey" cuz I cast my own bullets, lube & size old school. Oh, I may have to take that back about not naming guns. When working up loads for my S&W 460 XVR, it was discovered what a "Hand Cannon" is!:cuss:o_O:rofl:

Two have names that I remember which is which...SA M1 Garand "Katherine Elizabeth" and Eddystone M1917 "Brittany."

Their names are both borrowed from girls I know in real life. The one who knows she has a rifle named after her thought it was cool.

My trap gun is Tibbie, an 870 TB. Skeet gun is Loudmouth Winnie, a M12 skeet with a Cutts. Carry guns, are Lucy and Kimmy, a LCP II and a Kimber Micro. My Clinton's is John Rupp, one i copied in 1976 from an original. The rest have names that are mostly unprintable depending on how they behave.

Do any of you name your guns? If so, what are some names and what are the origins?

I have a couple of named guns. The first is a .223 Contender called "Subtle". It stands for "Son Uvva B****, That's Loud". Great fun at the indoor range.

The second is a .308 Remington 700 called "Valkyrie". This is a gun I did some work on myself (barrel chop, recrowning, staining the stock, etc.), so I felt it earned a moniker of it's own. I don't know why I chose "Valkyrie", but it just seemed right.
No. I have a hard time remembering people's names. I would be like what did I name this one for at least a month.

The first time one of my friends shot my AR10, he said something like "am AR15 is like a good wife. This thing is like sneaking out with a mistress." . Well that's the PG version at least.

So he called it the mistress a couple more times after that and the name stuck.

If it counts, another friend calls my stainless 1911 "Gladys" but he calls his (and everybody else's) stainless 1911 Gladys.

If I ever pick a favorite gun, I'll name it Vera

This thread reminded me of a big tobacco chewing bubba officer on our department back in the day. His nickname was "Windy" because his stories lasted forever....Anyway, he called his patrol shotgun "Betsy". Betsy was his back up he said.

Anyway, one night he stopped a car on a felony stop by himself. As we were racing to his location, the dispatcher asked if he was "10-4" and back up was en route. I heard him come over the radio that he and "Betsy" had everything under control. I think the dispatcher was confuse as to what officer named "Betsy" was with him, but we all knew what he meant. Still funny memory to this day.

I hear in addition to letting kids have cell phones, the birth control glasses are less ugly now. It's a new Army.

Yeah, the new BCGs are much less ugly now. I won't say stylish, but I actually didn't mind sporting them for a few years. The wife actually had a laugh when I told her what we called them.
And don't' get me started on recruits with cell phones in Basic/Boot. Our Chief's (CMSGt AF) son went through AF basic about a year and a half ago and told him about the cell phones and all this other stuff. The Chief nearly blew a gasket. You know we've been around the block, a time or two, when the conversation starts with "well, back in my day..."
The Chief is retiring in a few months. I'm going to miss him. We've had a couple of good trips together to some interesting places. Outside of Navigators, I've seen very few in the AF that can work a map and compass like he can.

To keep it back on topic. One of my shooting buddies, recently got into the hobby. He owns a Beretta 92, a CX4 Storm and a Taurus revolver. He always says he's bringing the Italian or Brazilian girls out to the range. I can't remember what he's called them.
