New thinking about AR-15

I want a M-15, and it is all Rock-N-Roll to me.. hahahaha

I'm the OP, sorry for using the term 'tacticool'. I didn't intend or realize that it would be offensive. Also, I used 'assault' in quotes to hopefully indicate that I fully realize that it's NOT a true assault rifle.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Many interesting points to consider!

For the stated purpose of slow-fire, recreational target shooting at paper targets, what are your thoughts on AR vs a bolt rifle? For an AR type rifle, my preference would be something along the lines of a traditional Colt AR-15 A2 with open sights.

I'm not really interested in competitive shooting because I don't think my vision is good enough to compete well with younger eyeballs and because I think it would ruin the relaxation and stress-free aspect of why I shoot.

Thanks in advance.

Well I posted my no frills AR types with my comments. As to an AR in .223 versus a bolt gun in .223 I also have a bolt action .223 rifle.

I had an old blued action Remington .222 that I converted to a .223 with a stainless fluted 26" barrel I had. I would have preferred a 1:7 twist but had a 1:12 so used it. Sort of a two tone type rifle. I trued the action and installed the barrel and was pleased. Never got to bedding it but the barrel is floated and I put an 11 degree crown on it. The only downside to this rifle is it gets me away from the 80 grain Sierra Match King bullets I like. I load Nosler 55 grain ballistic boat tails for it and it will out shoot any of my AR types (well except the 7.62 X 51).

Like just about any .223 bolt action rifle it is a pleasure to shoot and relaxing to shoot having virtually zero recoil.

As to any comparison between my AR types to bolt type in .223? Each has their own merits and downsides. I don't see a direct comparison between the two types. For a first? I would likely opt for the AR and follow up later with a bolt rifle and if I had to do it all again likely a Savage .223 rifle.

Just My Take....

Tacti-cool? What's that?

Because it's a primary motivation for youngsters raised on "spec ops" video games. They have to be cool and they have to be tactical to be cool. They might not be able to hit the side of a barn from inside the barn (so 20 rounds makes sense to them) and they may be more dangerous to their friends than to the zombies they're shooting at, but hey, they're lookin' COOL!

I'm an old Fudd. I prefer my Fudd guns, even have a couple of SxS shotguns for bird hunting. A nice, easy to carry lever gun is quicker to the eye and more powerful and I can get a second shot off if necessary rather quickly, but with an adequate caliber, a second shot is rarely necessary. Hell, I even hunt with .50 caliber smoke poles. If I wanted an autoloader, I'd probably go with a Browning in a heavy caliber. They make 'em in .338 Win Mag, but I don't live in Alaska.

The OP is about "target shooting", though, be that formal or informal, don't believe he said, but the AR is plenty accurate. I just don't care for the platform and my informal target shooting involves .22 rimfire.......modified lately to .22 short as it seems to be the only bloomin' rimfire I can find other than .22 magnum. But, that's another thread. :D
