Night vision and the effects of firing your handgun

muzzle flash can be blinding to human NV...
distance of the flash from the eye, aswell as intensity of the flash and color spectrum of the flash, are the strongest determining factors.
many "defence" loads expose a more yellow/orange flash and cause less effect to the eye's adjustment.
Whiter flashes WILL have more effect. (tho our eye actually reads the blue light that is seen as white, versus red for more yellow flashes).

I definetly shoot every weapon I own in the dark, many times, even multiple target training (mtt/mtc) mostly with pistols tho.
fortunately I life in a verry rural area, my nearest neighbor is a mile away, and I can do all kinds of unconventional testing that I think should be routine for everybody serious about defence.

powder used is JUST as impacting as barrel length and Cal.

and yes any/every flash WILL effect youre nv, if youre eyes have actually adjusted. (sit in the dark 3 min, then try ;) )

I shoot my Mosin just for the flash!

Kidding aside (sorta), I too have experienced "NightSite glare" on a G17. Made it hard to see the target past the sights, certainly not quick for the reacquisition.

Although flash didn't affect me enough with my S&W4013 to see a flame shape, it did make finding my sights pretty difficult(impossible) in extreme low light. My eyes aren't perfect but I'm only 27, so hopefully it was an effect of the "middle of the woods BFE".
