I read a post awhile back and the person asked about the effectiveness of Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets. In addition to taking mule deer I have been to Africa twice with my son to hunt plains game.

I have taken the following animals in Africa using a Winchester Model 70 in 30-06 with a 180 grain Nosler BT, all were one shot kills and none ran more than 50 yards before dropping. Warthog,Blue Wildebeest,Black Wildebeest, Impala, Nyala, Common Reedbuck and Gemsbuck.

The Nosler is a proven winner with me and this is the load I use in my 30-06.

Federal Case
Federal 210M Primer
180 grain Nosler BT
55 grains WW760

Nosler's BTBT is great! I preferred it in my .270 Win. I used the following:

Sako Finnbear
Federal brass
Federal 210 benchrest primer
130 grain Nosler BTBT
62 grains AA 3100 powder

Geno

I use BT's in 30-06, 25-06, 270, 30-30 Contender and 308. All are proven very accurate for me and their effectiveness on game animals have all been just great. I've only used them on whitetail deer and hogs however.

Ballistic tips are great bullets, the only problem I have had with them, is close range shots I'm using my 7mag for example, A 150 grn bullet pushing at 3000 fps. tends to explode causing severe tissue and meat damage. At 100 yards and further they are perfect and super accurate to.

BTs are the most accurate bullets in my 308.

I've only shot one deer with them (150 gr. handload) and the results were impressive.
I stopped using them after that. They do their job but a little too well. The bullet completely dessentigrated and did not pass through the deer as I would prefer. Tissue destruction was massive.
After that I decided that I wanted more penetration and a cheaper bullet.

If you need deeper penetration, try the Nosler Accubond. In my rifle (.280), 140 BTs and 140 ABs hit in the same spot.

I love em in my .280 and .30-06. I like the Ballistic Silvertips in the .280, they're the same bullet I think, just coated with the teflon. I love Noslers. I picked up some 160 grain Accubonds for a good deal at a local show and I'm gonna try them as well. I've heard they combine the best features of the BT and the Partition. We'll see.

I was curious about a truly great hunting load for my 06 when I start reloading. Thanks for the info and the species of African Big Game.

I've used the BT's on varmints but I'm not sold on them. They work but I have seen to many times where they don't disintegrate. And I don't like that in a varmint bullet.

Maybe next season I get the chance to try some bigger game with the BT.

My favorite was the bullet Nosler made before the BT with a lead tip, and I can't even remember what it was called.

i have generaly gone to either the balistic tips or SSTs for guns with launch velocitys under 3k. If its gonna launch much over that or more importantly land at something over 2500 i generaly look to heavier then standard bullets, or something a bit stronger.
