I have been looking at getting an NRA life membership and I was wondering if it had any perks besides eventually saving money. At the current membership rate of $35 a year, it would take 29 years of membership to make this worthwhile. What I appreciate the ability to say that I am a "NRA life member," are there any special benefits to go along with such a membership? From what I saw on NRA.com it looks like no.

"Special benefits?" Well, I believe the free gun insurance policy they offer all members is set at a higher level as opposed to year-to-year members. The main benefit in my mind is that you've taken the steps to be part of the efforts to protect all of our 2nd amendment rights.

That said, $35.00 a year for 29 years might be a little expensive. But I'm betting you'll spend more than $1,015.00 over 29 years on less important things. But it doesn't work like that anyway, a life membership is either a lump sum of $1,000.00, or 40 payments of $25.00.

Keep an eye out around here toward the end of the year, many life members (and above) receive offers to recruit new members, and offer a reduced rate life membership at considerable discount. The last few years, several members here have shared that offer to those here who wish to upgrade to a life membership. I took advantage of such a deal here a few years back and became a life member for $300.00. The offer I received last year was restricted to only members of my family, and I took advantage of it to upgrade my wife and son to life membership, I also upgraded to Endowment status at that time.

Life membership gives you the satisfaction that you are supporting the defense of our 2nd amendment rights at higher level than most citizens. I just upped my membership to "Patron". Listening to Wayne LaPierre, Olie North, Michael Reagan and others at this past weekends NRA Annual meeting drove the point home for the need to personally defend our rights.

I never really thought about it before, but I saw a post on here a while back to this effect: If you buy a life membership, they already have your money, and they lose accountability to you. If you pay by the year, you can "vote with your dollars" and if you feel they are getting out of line, you can move your support to a different RTKBA organization.

Accountability

If you buy a life membership, they already have your money, and they lose accountability to you.

Life members can vote for the Board of Directors.

Tell me, in what way do they "lose accountability" to people who become eligible to vote the board members?

If I run an organization, and I have to worry about a) those people who pay memberships, or b) those who can vote me off the board, to whom, do you imagine, will I tend to pay more attention?

If you have a vote, you have accountability.

especially since you can VOTE them out if they did...Life Membership is the way to go if you like the 2nd Amendment and want to keep your guns...JMO

Well said.........

Ultimately, it's more about donating to a group/cause you believe in - not about what you can get out of it.

That having been said, I got a wicked cool bowie knife and plaque. :D

It is THE orginization with clout and stroke in Washington, it does many good things on the local and State levels as well..

When I joined as a "Lifer" the Annual Membership dues were $15.00, today they are $35.00.. Where will they be in 29 years?

The $300 life membership offer comes around every so often...

Good deal if you're young. Less so, if you're a senior citizen.
I've mentioned this before and I'll mention it again....

If you are a disabled veteran (of ANY percentage by the VA) you qualify for the same $300.00 "Distinguished Life Membership" as the NRA "retired" membership.

At my age (and I'm a life member of the VFW) I recently looked at the VFW, AARP, and the NRA to see which group best represents me and ALL my interests as a (soon to be) more "senior" individual and as a disabled veteran and regretably, the NRA "won" hands down.

The VFW is a dying organization that really doesn't do much anymore - not since the second Iraq war - OIF/OEF - because the government FINALLY started recognizing vets and increasing the VA budget and services accordingly. Sure, it's still a "viable" organization, but it's not what it used to be.

AARP? Fo'get about'em... They represent no one and skewered every senior with the recent Medicare changes.

NRA offers me MORE benefits than the VFW and AARP combined and even better represent me as a medically retired/disabled vet.

NOTE: I exercised my "do not send" option with the NRA long long ago and get nothing from them but the magazine and MY local NRA/ILA alerts regarding pending changes in laws for MY state via email - and that's it... nothing else - ever.

Now - if I could FIND a way to "stop" all the crap that comes from the VFW (credit card/insurance/retirement home/clothing catalogs, scooters/medical testing equipment, etc etc etc) I'd be a happy man....

Same "math" with the VFW.... when I qualified to join the VFW in 1983, they had a "special life membership offer" for $100.00 when the annual dues at that time were about (approximately) $9.00 per year.

Back then - the VFW was WORTH it... 100.00 lifetime membership.
Now - for the annual membership, it's between $20-25.00

Yeah - it's worth it, especially when those special offers come around.....

Hello the camp! What a wake-up call! I saw the post title, then went to NRA site, since my response was to be, "Depends on how old you are." Can you say, "sticker shock"? It figures that andrew had already done the math.
I became a life member before the price increase in early '80s.
It was almost by accident; when I sent in my 5-yr form, I was sent, with my member stuff, a notice that, should I elect to go for life, what I'd already paid, $50, would apply to the $200, decreasing with time. I could also pay at $25/qtr or some such. As it turned out, my wife of a week-and-a-half [exageration, but just barely; wed in Mar '82] got the first payment notice and paid it off. To my everlasting gratitude and pride, my life cert is dated on my bday in Nov '82!
This is the long way to say that I have received, to me, full benefit from my membership. It's your call whether current cost--they still have the 425/qtr--is worth it to you. While I have recd the discount rate notices, I have not acted on them. Rest assured, if I am able, I will extend such offer to this forum.
I fully agree with stickhauler re value of membership and with toforo re degree of representation nationally. NRA, thorns and all, is our best present hope. See ya round the campfire. mm

Reading this thread sent me off to the NRA website. I can't do $1K for the lifetime membership right now, but I did just sign up for the three year deal. This is my first time as a member of the NRA, and I think it's about time.

Congrats and welcome to The Fellowship!

NOTE: Take a few minutes on the NRA website and "set-up your account"
(this is also where you'll learn the "Life-Member Secret Handshake" and also gives you special access to the NRA "lifetime membership" online store)

Finally, this is also where you can make/adjust "your account settings" to determine how much - if any - of the NRA mailings/email alerts you want to/don't want to receive.

I love being a Lifer, and I also have upgraded to Patron Life. I became a Life Member in '95 when I decided to do the $25/quarter deal. After 2 quarters I got an offer for Life for $500 so I only had to send in $450 to get it.

I also do not recieve all the mail except for the magazine - I told them to quit sending me that stuff long ago.

I might be able to sponsor a couple of new life members for $300 instead of the usual $1000.

Even at the present price, a Lifer membership costs less than a high class target rifle and, in the long run, will do you more good.

Besides, I can order hat pins and jacket patches that you can't. ;)

Lol, thanks. I did check out the website, and it looks like I'll have to wait until I get my member number before I can set up an online account. As soon as I get that, I'll get that going.

I'm looking forward to this, and it's something I shoulda done a long time ago.
