My information is in the form of a photo....and the very knowlegable people at AR15.com. There is no way a casting is better than a forging. Its not rocket science. Castings will have many flaws generally that cant be seen other than by x-ray. Drop your casting the right way and it breaks or cracks and you cant tell it...drop a forged piece all day long with just minor scuffing to the out side. Why would the casting break when hit with a hammer and the forged no damage????? Sure you go forever and never have a problem ...your choice...mine is forged. As far as the gun deal goes, you can build a nice gun for around $550, thats with quality parts not junk. Thats something you might want to look into. Its easier than you think to make your own. Get a complete upper, stripped lower and a lower parts kit. You would still have a $100 for a few mags and some ammo and know exactly what youve got. Dont forget used guns are like used cars....you dont know if its got 100,000 miles of hiway or 100,000 miles of ruff road on it.

OK! forged IS better than a casting BUT in the AR15 a good high quality casting is just fine. I don't believe your statement that hitting a forged AR receiver won't damage it beyond repair. If you wish to donate a receiver, I am willing to be convinced.:D But in the land of plastic AR lowers I fail to see the "big deal" between cast or forged receivers made from aluminum. Now if you want to talk steel vs ANY aluminum receiver, lets turn the clock back to the 1950's. The difference between steel and aluminum is much more relevant.

As I stated before...a forging will take more abuse than a casting. I didnt say it was indestructable. At a certain point everything will break. The example I gave...the casting was destroyed with a hammer....the forging had to be cut into with a torch. In my opinion forging is best. We can argue the merits of each all day long...but there just our opinions.

I'm going to be buyign my first pre-ban and I'm buying Olympic. Why? Becasue they have a service where they'll "repair" your pre-ban. What they do is take and destroy your old receiver and stamp the pre-ban serial number on a brand new FORGED receiver and ship it right back to you, and it RETAINS IT'S PRE-BAN STATUS. It is kosher with the ATF!!!

BOOM! Brand NEW Pre-Ban!!!! If the ban doesn't sunset, you never have to worry about your "priceless" rifle again; if it breaks, get a "new" pre-ban!

They offer an identical service for Registered Receivers as well.

I sent my pre-ban SGW reciever to Olympic and had a new reciever stamped with my old serial number.
The mag well is very tight and won't drop some mags. But it is a nice option.
