Only about 4% of NY assault rifles are registered, new stats suggest

Seeing as NYC dominates both Senate seats already, a split would instead yield new seats for upstate (along with more independent House seats).

Here's a fun graphic with a salient point, while we're talking about 3/5ths compromises;

Abbot down in Texas is this very moment suing to have districting apportioned by potential voters, rather than by bulk population (illegal immigrants, felons, deployed military, temporary residents). Given cities' propensity for a few of those groups, the shrill cry is of course, 'racism'

In truth, the prisons are probably a large lart of what binds upstate to NYC. Lotta money, jobs, and apparently, representation they would not have otherwise. The graphic obviously argues the city deserves even more absolute control over state affairs, if that's even possible. So why not make it its own entity (a District) and allow the other regions to resume governing themselves as intended by our republican system? It was never designed for remote political domination, as that is exactly what we broke from England for.

Careful what you wish for. Say NYC does get cut off from the rest of the state and becomes its own State. That is 2 more votes in the Senate. Looking at the 2012 results by district it isn't clear that even a New York with NYC would swing Republican.
not sure what you're looking at, but new york state without new york city would vote overwhelmingly republican, and does vote overwhelmingly republican, every election.

Precisely, Teapot. The only change would be towards more equitable representation, as it should be, but which is impossible at present, precisely because the city has so much more power.

Contemplating these threads that discuss altering the most basic construction of the constitutional organization of our country is always fantastically fascinating. It is the same fantastic fascination that would capture my mind as contemplating someone attempting to juggle three glass balls full of nitroglycerin. In other words, since the juggling of nitro or the discussed constitutional changes are fantastically improbable the contemplation of both are fascinating instead of terrifying. The thought of the chaos caused by “100+” states reminds me of the videos often shown of brawls in the parliaments of some nations. The thought of how an increase in the number of states would facilitate an increase and obfuscation of political corruption reminds me of NYC’s 19th century Tammany Hall organization. If we are going to reduce the supposed unfair political power that some people in less populated areas believe is occurring because of NYC’s population/land ratio why not also do the opposite? Why not require several of the least populated but hugely large in land states to consolidate into one state to reduce the supposed unfair political power of so few people having too much power in the Senate? I am now returning to reality after enjoying a ride on the political fantasy train. For all of you still enjoying the ride, best regards.

Remember too that there is a serious duty and obligation upon the State to arrest and prosecute every single offender with an "assault rifle". That's going to be a lot of jail cells.

I suspect that a map of Illinois would look nearly identical. A map of California would probably have three or four of those red "blobs" with the rest of the state green.

The New York City metropolitan area by itself contains 64% of the entire state's population. It really ought to be cut loose, cast off and set adrift.

There...fixed it for you. :)

I'm looking at the results from the 2012 election.

Look at the "Presidential Map" in the top right. Even outside of New York City the majority of counties voted for Obama over Romney.

The House Districts outside of the city also when 5 / 4 to Democrats

Yes, there are some big blocks of red but a lot of blue too. It isn't just NYC that votes Democrat. Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Ithaca, and Albany do too.

I don't know about "low-level felony". Last time I looked at the NY statutes (when SAFE Act was being ramrodded through), it was a lesser penalty under state law to possess an unregistered NFA weapon than it was to possess a semi-auto or magazine banned under SAFE.

I'm glad to see that despite that New Yorkers value their inherent civil rights more than they fear an unjust law.

GREAT point, especially considering NYS does not allow any NFA items in the first place... And- take a look at this list of crimes NYS considers LESS serious than owning a 30 round mag!

The larger state would go broke without the NYC & suburbs tax revenue.

Oh please, the rest of the state could more than make up the difference by selling NYC all of the upstate water they rely on

I'd guess about 99% of assault rifles are registered in NY, as by technical definition, an assault rifle is selective fire. I'm sure there are a few 'basement conversions' about, but I'd suspect most are on the NFA 's rolls......
.

NYS doesn't allow NFA items, so no

I suspect 99% of the people owning "assault rifles" in NY have the weapons registered. I guess there are just a lot less than people think. Funny how that works.

Do you realllllly think there are only 40,000 or so so-called "AW's" that have been sold in NYS? Come on now. And under the old law NY'ers were stuck massively over-paying for preban guns and mags, which they did in droves

Just curious, aside from the taxes generated by Wall St., banks headquartered in NYC, the thousands of company headquarters in NYC and Westchester Cty., and the international commerce that flows through NYC, where and how do think all this additional money is being produced in the rest of NYS?

Wall St banks, too-big-to-fail financial institutions and many other international organizations pay next to nothing in taxes to the state as a percentage of their revenue and profits

That map is so misleading, dirt doesn't get a vote, we all know the vast majority of the population lives in the red counties.

Oh, so all of the "fly over" states in America shouldn't get a vote or be represented either?????

Living in Upstate NY I can tell you that I could careless about which way the money flows and the financial ramifications,I would love to see the cancer(NYC) cut off this beautiful state.
Besides I would be willing to bet that a very large number of people who registered are LEO who were threatened to by Cuomo.

LEO's absolutely had to register theirs under threat of losing their jobs. And as someone living on Long Island I couldn't agree more!

It's been estimated there are well over 1 million "AW's" in NY. I'd bet it's over 2M that now qualify. NY gun owners are not stupid, a simple modification makes an AR compliant therefore, no need to register, the rest were lost in boat accidents. FUAC

Upstate New Yorkers have had to suffer with the scandalous duplicity between Albany and New York City for over A hundred years. The severe anti gun laws here are largely due to state politicians appealing to the city and it's huge liberal voting block and money. Deals are made behind closed doors full of corruption.
I used to love it here. The Finger Lakes are as beautiful as anywhere in the country. The older I get the more intrusive the state has become. The more freedoms the state has taken. The fewer jobs there are as businesses are driven out by the high state taxes, mostly going to feed the beast that is New York City.

The flawed SAFE Act was no more than a political move by a governor, taking advantage of a tragedy, trying to show himself more presidential than the actual president to line himself up to run for that office.
