I am a Brit who has married an American citizen and I am wondering about the open carry laws in MO where I now live and if I would legally be allowed to open carry

Mo. does have open carry but you still need a carry permit first. Check out Handgunlaw.us

As I understand it open carry is legal but is not subject to statewide preemption, so localities may have local ordinances that prohibit it. I'm not sure if there is any good way to find out if a particular locality has such an ordinance or not.

Open carry is legal for those who have a Missouri CCW license.

One never sees anyone doing it in urban and suburban areas.

I never see anyone open carry in the St. Louis or St. Charles areas. That doesn't mean there aren't people doing it somewhere, though. There was an open carry march in Ferguson the other day, I believe sponsored by the Oath Keepers. I don't think they got the local turnout they were hoping for, judging by news reports.

To be clear, open carry is legal in Missouri, but as mentioned above, some cities have passed laws prohibiting. A Concealed Carry Permit recognized by Missouri allows open carry in spite of these prohibitions. Missouri recognizes everybody's permits.

While open carry is leagle in MO, I don't think it is a good idea. There are some that would panic and it could lead to bad situations. Others do it to make a point that it is leagle, but may send the wrong message to folks.

So you're saying that you believe the citizens of MO have a greater panic reaction than say, the very liberal citizens of Seattle? Seriously, if we can walk around Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle, with tourists from all over the globe, without causing so much as a raised eyebrow, what makes you believe it would happen there?

Most of us do it because we flat-out don't worry about it. I wear a watch on my wrist, a hat on my head, and a Sig on my belt. In my mind they are all just another accoutrement that I put on when I get dressed to go out.

I suspect the only reason you think it's a big deal is because it's a big deal to you. Not everyone is burdened with the same inhibitions. ;)

I live and work in the St. louis area and open carry more often than concealed. Not trying to make a political statement it is just more comfortable for me. No one has ever said anything to me about it.

What situations have you witnessed where this happened?

Open carry is legal in MO without permit now. Municipalities can no longer make laws against open carry either. CCW license age is now 19. This happened this year. I'm a I'm a 20yo Missouri resident and I open carry everywhere. Haven't had a chance to get my cc license yet.

sorry, But that is not true.

:banghead:Open carry has always been legal in MO. Local municipalities have the right to limit open carry.

Exception is if you have a Valid CCW then you can carry in MO in any city.

MO law is changing rapidly enough that the handgun.law internet site is usually out of date. Do NOT depend on it for accurate information.

Hey, you could tell the officer on the scene you read it on the internet.

By law, I could carry an AR15 pistol openly in the Chiefs parking lot - for a few minutes. I seriously doubt I'd make it to the gates. I don't intend to forget shaving my neck, either.

Around town here, common as dirt. I work in a auto parts store, no one makes a scene over it. For the most part, another boring black plastic gun. We see far more interesting ones at the local ranges.

The only people who fear them are the ones trying to be fear mongers. IE one relative was outspoken about them for years - but, their neighborhood went sour with rentals and even arson to defraud insurance. She has a gun now. End of hearing about it.

BTW, as a historical note - where was the first SOF invitational 3Gun Match held? Chapman Range, Columbia, MO. It's not all about the Metros here. The MDC sells over 500,000 firearms deer permits and they take over 250,000 each season. I've never been to a range with nobody there, and commercial ones are popping up - not closing. It's not the Coast. Nope, that's the last thing we want.

To the OP: get a concealed carry license. Not only will it allow you to carry concealed or open in MO, it will cover you for concealed carry in many other states. Open carry, in my opinion, gives away the tactical advantages of concealed carry. It marks you for attention by the criminal/terrorist as well as potentially being harassed by law enforcement if citizens become alarmed at seeing you carrying openly. Wear a shirt outside your pants and then you can have the advantage of OWB open carry, and yet remain concealed. Other than when in a rural or wilderness area, I cannot imagine choosing to open carry.

The question was about the legality of open carry.

Yes it is legal in MO. There have been people meeting at dining establishments while openly carrying. There was a guy open carrying at one of the entertainment districts in Kansas City, MO which posted about his experience with law enforcement.

It is legal. No permit required. But if you do, there is a decent chance you will be approached by law enforcement. That is not necessarily a bad thing.
