I've shot MOA with buckhorns, that doesn't mean a receiver mounted peep isn't 100x better.

I used to be a vocal detractor of "optics." Then I got old enough that I needed peep sights. And now I'm eating my words and going glass.

Have you looked at a tube sight? They're just a long straight tube with crosshairs at one end; no glass. They appeared on target rifles about the time muzzle loaders started going away. I haven't had a chance to try one for myself, but you might want to surf around and check them out.
