Buddy of mine and I were shooting over the early muzzleloader season and he was showing me his Hawkins rifle. It had a conversion nipple unit of some sort to allow him to use small rifle primers instead of the #11 caps. He of course doesn't remember where he got it.

Anyone know what this is, and where I might be able to find it? Spent a deal of time searching the net, but couldn't seem to find anything.

My 1977 issue of the Dixie Gun Works catalog shows "SM" nipples on page 232, which accepted small rifle primers. I just now did a search on the Dixie website for "SM" nipples and came up with nothing. Maybe they didn't go over too well. Don't know if anyboby else makes these things nowadays.

Good luck in your quest.

I have a few new Accra-Shot conversion nipples. One THR member said that they worked well for insuring against a misfire while hunting. But he also said that the spent primer is difficult to remove for repriming because it requires a pick.
He bought a couple of extras so that he could simply unscrew the top of the unit off which contains the fresh primer for quicker reloading.
I still have a couple of new ones left with the CVA/Traditions nipple threading and I recently aquired another new one with the Lyman/Investarms threading. Because they've been discontinued, they can only found when they turn up. Sometimes they're for sale on eBay or at gun shop that has old stock.
There's also other nipple options using 209's or musket caps listed in post #2 below:

Interesting thread. I just took in for restoration an old T/C Seneca that has one of those things on it. Could not for the life of me figure out what it was, since a 209 primer would not fit. Now I see it's for rifle cartridge primers. I replaced it with a standard nipple and was going to just throw it away; I think now I'll keep it in the possible drawer and use it to confuse and amaze my friends.

Primer nipples for just about anything seem to be available for BP. The bigger problem is figuring out what thread you have tapped in the barrel.

Lots of nipples come in odd metric sizes because of the tooling that maker had at the time. I find that the biggest obstacle to figuring out what is needed.

There is a recent article in a deer hunting mag that examines the flame propagation of 209 primers. Makes a good case they may be way too hot for reliability and accuracy. Big primers can propel a ball up to 350 fps just on their own - and tend to push the powder and round before it ignites.

Like anything American, too much of a good thing.

Does anybody else recall a system that used primed 9mm cases for the caps?
Could of been another pistol brass. I remember it as being well received by hunters as they were easier to use than musket caps and shot shell primers.
Drawback was it needed a new hammer.
