Pistol/rifle exchange rate

What? And let him shoot me with my rifle after I was out of handgun range?

We carry handguns in the unlikely event we need to protect ourselves sometime. In this scenario, I'd see it being a daily necessity. Rifle, thanks.

Were you guarded by others whilst you slept, ate, cleaned yourself?

In combat, a pistol is not as powerful or effective as a rifle. I think we all realize that. But a pistol can be on the body at times when a rifle cannot. Those tend to be the times we are in the most compromised of positions. Effectiveness in combat is not unimportant. But daily chores and needs are more a priority in my opinion.

Ah, but in that situation, I'd much rather that the guys on perimeter Guard detail were able to interdict at 400 or more meters out than 40 or 60 meters. Which is why the Guard Detail reports with their rifles. Even better is to have serious long-range surveillance and the security of a Regimental frontage.

I absolutely agree. My point was that not everyone can expect to be in such well organized and disciplined company in the "wasteland".

For example, the OP does not begin with: You are walking through the wasteland one day with the rest of your platoon, out on a regular patrol from your well fortified, supplied, and heavily guarded base...

Apples and oranges.

I would keep my rifle if I only had one. But if I was carrying my second rifle that day, I’d surely trade it for a few good handguns. A good S&W 686 or model 64 would be a lot easier to pack when around the farmstead…. Because even the most hardy hombre in the post-apocalyptic wasteland has to have a home base and spend some time in his territory/home turf/compound/courtyard of the fort/etc doing menial everyday tasks, and it’s sure a lot easier to scrounge, carry loads, or take care of an animal without dealing with a rifle 24/7.

Assuming they’re all good handguns (no Lorcin or what have you) and my rifle for trade isn’t ultra-niche in a weird caliber, I’d think an exchange rate of about 3:1 would be reasonable.

In an end of the world scenario I would not trade a rifle for a pistol. Especially when I have a personally comfortable level of both.
