possible gunshots outside my home: what I learned.

Would one of the other not licensed to carry guns been just as good as the .45 for the wife and kid?

No. The .45 has a weapons light and is a very low-recoil, easy to control weapon (Ruger p345). My wife has experience with it and can control it with one hand if needed (she may need one hand free to wrangle our toddler).

The other choices at the time (not including long guns) would have been one of several .22 target pistols, an unreliable FTL .22 auto nine, or an old Hi-Point 9mm (which is a reliable weapon and accurate enough for HD but has no light, is heavier than the .45, harder for her to control, and leaves smaller holes in the target).

Besides that, I've always said my primary concern is not my own safety, but the safety of my wife and child. I'll always leave them with the better weapon if given the choice.

For the record, I'm planning to purchase another quick-access safe to mount inside a closet downstairs with the Hi-Point in it (no money for another gun right now). At least this way there will be reliable firepower available downstairs. The .45 stays in a similar safe which is mounted to our headboard when it's not on my hip.
