Powder compatibility approximation.

Interesting list that can give on an idea of a powder that will provide a similar performance from another.

DO NOT ASSUME THEY ARE INTERCHANGABLR GRAIN FOR GRAIN!!!!!!!

Use reputable published data for the new powder that you are using for working up new loads.

Just a burning rate chart. Like the other charts, it simply groups powders with similar burning rates close together. Powders close together in the chart are often suitable for the same cartridges.

They're groupings are OK most of the time. But the H4350/H414 is a blatant error.
I much prefer the IMR list that just numbers them in order without grouping them.
Then I use load data to find my choices.

I’d say that’s pretty obvious but it’s at least a place to start.

I’ve already emailed many of the manufacturers for their recommendations.

It may be obvious to a veteran reloader that the powders are not interchangable grain for grain but not necessarily to a novice.

That should provide appropriate load data. The main line powder manufacturers have a presence on the internet with their data.

H4227 / H110 IMR4227 W296
Disagree

At least with H110 and W296 and W231 and HP38, Hodgdon has announced that they are the same powder. If you look at current load data, from Hodgdon, the data is the same.

There is at least one pair of Accurate/Western powders that are the same that I know of. I'm sure there are few others.

The point is, do not assume they are the same unless you have reputable information confirming two different powders are actually the same. If reputable information is not found or you are not comfortable with what you find, find reputable data to use for developing your load.

Yep, I read "powder equivalent" not "powder interchangeability". A reloading manual is for load data and reloading texts/charts are for general information...
That's were the problem lies. Equivalent by definition means equal to.
Newer people may or may not understand the issue.
Powders that give equivalent Velocities would be a better descriptor.
Or similar powders

Powder burn rate charts are from "closed bomb" tests, and in the real world where a powder falls on the burn rate chart can change from one caliber to another.

Burn rate charts are an approximation and if you have a powder that is working well it can give you a suggestion of what other powder might work well too.

Follow published load data from trusted sources.
