Preferred powder for 45 acp

Hodgdon Universal is the best 45 ACP powder.

Cleaner than Bullseye. Not messy like 700X. 1000's of rounds between cleanings. But if you mostly carry or look at the gun and don't shoot much or really like cleaning, Bullseye is great.

Bullseye,700X,Win 231,HS-6,AA No.5 and AA No. 2 all work for me. Bullseye and 700X are powders I use the most for 45acp.

I love 700x in 38 special and 9mm but it is 30% dirt by weight.
lol, I see that from time to time, but I had great luck with it in .38 Spl and .44 Spl accuracy wise with lead bullets. Good stuff. Very accurate, and seemed pretty clean. :)

What bullet did you use? HS-6 and 230 grain Speer Gold Dots have made me some nice ammo, running about 875 FPS from a 1911/845 FPS from a SIG P220, with pretty good ES and low SD.
I used the Lee 230 grain tumble lubed mold cast from wheel weights.

HP38/W231 and AA#2 work well for me for target velocity load in .45.
Faster powders are better IMO for the lighter loads.
I would try your HP38 and Bullseye first.

If you want full power then something in the middle is about right.
CFE-P gives great vels but is happiest at the high side of it's charge range.

With HP38, Bullseye and Unique one should fill the bill.
Lots of people like WST, never have gotten around to trying it but the people who use it say it is great.

PS: I liked N320 to but hard to find and extra $

It doesn’t really show it in my 38 special load, just leaves the gun a bit sooty. But in 9mm though the cases all come out black and the inside of the slide will look like a 22. Still I have shot thousands of rounds of it. Just need to tumble the brass a couple more hours.

We have been using Unique and BE-86 both have worked well.. both out of a Kimber 1911 and a Smith & Wesson full size.. You can get really nice smooth shooting rounds out of both powders..

There are many suitable powders with burn rates that will work fine, but I've used mostly WW-231 just because it meters better than Unique/Bullseye or the other flake type powders.

Bullseye, Unique, and AA#5 in that order. #5 is dirty stuff, but I get decent groups with it. I don't use a progressive or drop measure, so metering is not a concern for me.

Bet they shoot great for you. Been really finding PP to be very handy for a lot of rounds; loaded down, great. Pushed to the floorboards, great. Jacketed, cast, plated, great. I find it magical for true FBI type, .38 Special loads (158 LSWC-HP @ 900 FPS+), and 9mm Makarov too, along with 9mm, etc, etc... I can believe, and also recall BE86 is a flashed suppressed PP (Bullseye 84), so all that much better. Hercules/Alliant hit a home run with PP, and it seems with BE86 too.

My hands down favorite powder for loading the 45 Auto is W231.

There must be at least 20 powders these days that will work well in the 45 Auto, it's easy to load for sure. I have tried or shot 45 Auto ammo using Red Dot, Green Dot, Bullseye, Unique, Powder Pistol, AA#2, AA#5, Zip, True Blue, W231/HP-38, AutoComp, Universal, 700X, PB, Clays, Titegroup and probably a few others too. I have personally loaded at least 8 powders in the 45 but always seem to come back to W231. When I give W244 a try that might change but we will see.

I find Hp-thirty eight to be very accurate, however Power Pistol smells great. It also is very clean when drag racing jackets.

I have lost about thirty pounds since I began using it, and when I start shooting women begin to congregate around me. It could be me, but I suspect a fourty five Auto filled with Power Pistol is some sort of aphrodisiac! I ordered eight more pounds of it last week and immediately the bank came though with an even better mortgage rate! I went down stairs to put it away and the damp spot near the step wall was dry. I am really impressed with this powder!

I love Power Pistol!:)
