There's a picture of one of those in Handgun Hunting by Lee Jurras and George Nonte. It was copyrighted in 1974 I believe. I thought one of them would be interesting to shoot, but have never seen one

Paul,
I have that part covered, I run the pistol part of our clubs winter league!
What I meant is that I would love to find one of those old target revolvers for sale. After years of combing gun shows for treasure, I've never seen one. That's ok, I have a small collection that keeps me entertained.

I’ve never seen one in person either. If I ever do I’ll probably break my fingers trying to get my wallet out!

I've got an old Hawes .36 cal Navy with an early 4 digit serial #. Bottom one, the other is a Navy Arms 44.

The proof code will tell you a lot more than the serial number about how old or early a specimen you have.
Serial numbers on the Italian reproductions were not necessarily run chronologically in order.
Any of the importers like Hawes could specify a serial number range when placing their orders.
I do kind of like seeing all the little variations from the golden years of reproduction C&Bs.

Like Malachi said serial numbers don't mean jack. The Hawes was probably made by ASP, possibly ASM. There should be a manufacturers logo on it somewhere. The date code will be on the right side of the frame for both of them. I think Hawes stopped importing bp revolvers in the 70's.

Most Hawes BP pistols were made by ASP (Euroarms). Hawes quit importing all firearms into the US in 1980.
Italian serial numbers varied from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some used a continuous serial number string and fitted each model into the string so the very first of a new model might start with a 3,500 or a 10,000 serial number. Others started with number one for each model.
