RCBS Pro Chucker 5 vs Hornady LnL AP

If the Pro Chucker 5 costs the same as the Hornady, then that would seem to give the edge to to the Pro Chucker 5, because the Pro Chucker 5 can be converted to a Pro Chucker 7 if I want to do that later.

When I look at Amazon (just for price comparison), I see the Pro Chucker 5 for about $150 more than the Hornady Lock n Load progressive.

Did you get your Pro Chucker 5 from Molly’s Place on eBay? Do you know why they can sell the pressed for $100 or so less than anyone else?
Billy Bob's Bass sometimes sells Pro Chucker 5s for $400/free shipping on Amazon, not right now though :cuss:

You'll have to check back to catch it...add it to your watch list if you're interested.
...or Molly's for $408 : https://www.ebay.com/itm/RCBS-88910...305161&hash=item1ca480002a:g:k4gAAOSwJQtap8NE

Well that's the pits! I got mine from Billy Bob's Bass for exactly $400 free shipping. The product was brand new perfect condition with the latest primer slide parts. Yesterday they had 6 more at that price.........somebody was quick. Maybe it'll come back.

Yes I took a chance, never having ordered from him before.....figured RCBS would send me any parts not right...but there was nothing to worry about.
If I was ordering today, I'd probably try Mollys. She says New, It's also free shipping, takes Paypal too. $8 more is nothing.

I got it mounted today......making it into a 7 is interesting....I started late after a work day....and the brain is never 100% this late. It's coming, but I ran out of gas tonight. You do have to read ALL the instructions.....I missed one little detail changing out the indexer......they said use a ball end hex wrench.....Ohhhhh (after an hour trying to put it in without, it took two minutes with the damned ball end version! Pay attention to details!

Somebody asked how they can sell em so cheap. Sometimes manufacturers, to lower warehouse stock, give them deals which they pass on....some don't pass it on.

Does the Hornady LnL require expanding and powder drop in two stations, rather than using a single die for both as on the Lee presses? It looks like the RCBS uses two stations, but I don’t know if the Hornady works the same way.

You can expand using an expander die and drop powder with the powder measure or
That's what I do for pistol calibers on my LNL. Since I hand prime, nothing in station 1, expander in station 2, powder dump in station 3, seat in station 4, crimp in station 5, although I sometimes both seat and crimp in station 4.

You can do it in one if you have a PTX (powder thru expander) for the measure on the Hornady. I would imagine it is possible to get a PTX for the RCBS measure as well, or if you prefer to keep them separate you can do it that way as well. (eats up a station however)

I didn’t find a PTX die made by RCBS, so I thought that maybe the RCBS powder measure might not work with a PTX. If that’s true, it would be a big disadvantage to the ProChucker 5 compared to the Hornady LnL.

Not a PTX "die" per se, but a PTX to be used with their case activated assembly.

It's labeled for the Pro 2000, but will work on any press with the RCBS case activated assembly.
