Recent Encounter in Denver Metro!

The Denver light rail stops have been in the news in the past year as locations of incidents where people have been held up and robbed. A couple of students were shot even after giving up their wallets/money.

Good one on your friend for being aware, and stepping up to avoid becoming a vicitm.

I have a friend that had a gun presented to him on the light rail.
We both go to Metro Denver and live in Douglas County so naturally we take the light rail to save some money on gas. Anyways, i don't have class on friday but he does. On his way down he was sitting in a train car by himself. I don't remember the exact station but somewhere near yale a 16-18 yo mexican male boarded the train. At first he was sitting a few rows away from my friend and was staring at him. As the ride continued the suspect moved closer and closer until he was sitting next to him. At this point my friend (who is never aware of his surroundings and has nil tactical training) started to become worried. The guy pulled back his shirt and motioned for my friend to look over. He looked down and saw a pistol tucked into the guys waist. The guy told him to give up his wallet and his back pack. He did what the guy said and then the guy told him to get off at the next station.
In my opinion he handled himself properly seeing as how he wasn't at all armed with anything. What do you guys think?
I believe that this would justify a use of force or even possibly deadly force depending on what exactly the guy's threat was. IF this happened to someone that was armed.

I know exactly what you had to say. It's irrelevant. If someone is dressing like a thug due to it being in style, I will deal with them as if they are, in fact, a thug.
When you see a guy in an expensive Italian suit, do you treat him like he's in the mafia?

Bad tactical move by the robber. He's warned you that he's armed, how and where he's armed, and left his weapon in a position where with judicious action, he can be prevented from bringing it into action. I'm currently reading a copy of McGivern's "Book of Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting". I carry it wherever I go (Of course I ALWAYS have SOME kind of book). Even as a paperback, it's fairly substantial. I'd have tied up the gun in his waistband and done my level best to beat him to death with the spine of that book... which I doubt he would have expected. I might get killed. Of course I might get killed even while complying 100%. If I have to die, I'd rather it be while resisting with everything I've got and with the tactical advantage than totally submissive and helpless. But that's just me. Everyone has to make that choice for himself.

I was sad to learn that Denver had ended the Gang Task Force. From time to time, they used to hold open house briefings on gang activity and tactics. I wonder if the Urban Street Crime Unit has that, now?

Know the signs, the telltales.

In the OP's circumstance, I'd have checked he oddball's pupils, lips, and fingernails for any blatent sign of drug use. Was he absolutely immaculate? What was his posture, his respiration rate?

The two-step at the train station feels like it may have been a safer option than to commit to a more vulnerable posture that lost sight perimeter.

Denver at night, and later (o'dark-thirty)? Like, I suspect any major city, the predators are out and about. It can be worthwhile to do daylight runs through your most frequent traverses and previsualize each field of fire/possible ambush and then follow up at night to check for overlooked lighting issues.

I offer up the suggestion of the miniature air horn used and carried by kayakers and canoeists. As I have asthma, OC spray and variants' proximity when used are very dangerous, if not life-threatening at a single breath. The assembled air horn is about the size of half a tube of toothpaste, and lighter.

Think of it as a very real acoustic weapon to partner with a good light (I carry the X5).

And, in the two-step scenario, if oddball had followed you back ino the train, I'd have casually gotten out a cell phone, ordered a hotel room downtown with room service, and then taken his picture (you do keep the audible shutter option disabled, yes?) and at least sent it to my email account.

Just suggestions.

You got home safe and sound. Keep an eye out for oddball for a while, especially in the periphery.
