Remage or Savage

Certainly no expert but I’m wondering about the 1-8 twist for the 22-250 , the speed might blow the bullet up.
Varmint stocks should be available at Stockys with a V block.
I would not spend a bunch of money on truing up a Savage action because of the floating bolt head they don’t need much more than a bolt lift kit. IME anyway, the accutrigger blade can be removed if it really bothers you.
Good luck on your build and please report back

I had issues with 55s in my current rifle and it's a 12 twist. I'm planning on running 75-80ish grain bullets in the low to mid 3000s. I don't really have a specific goal.

I found a Savage 110 with blind mag for 275.
Due to Covid most of the barrel makers have a 6-8 month wait time. So I ordered a premade Shilen 26" 8 twist with Varmint contour.
If it doesn't shoot good enough. I'll step up a few levels.
I'm still contemplating the Boyd's thumbhole. I've used them before and like it. But I might consider other options if someone else makes a similar one.

My barrel came in. It's installed and floated on the original stock. I'm waiting on lapua brass, 88eld-m, and a new bolt knob.
I'm still trying to decide on the stock and scope.
I currently have a 3.5-14 p5 on it.
The factory single stage trigger is more than acceptable. So it's staying.

Nice,

Richards has some nice stocks, all different woods and designs and laminate. If you don't mind doing the Finnish work. Always worth calling them, never know what they have laying around. I've got some very nice stock for $50 from them calling and asking.

Bushnell on sale at Midway right now....just saying.

I have built three (3) Savage actions in 22-250 with a 1:8" twist rate barrel, specifically for shooting 55gr-75gr .224 bullets. They work very well for that. I would expect that you won't have to worry about the prospect of bullet delamination until you get down to the 40gr varmint bullet weights.

My next barrel will probably be a 1:6.5", so that I can use 80gr-90gr .224 bullets. (I tried to use the 88gr ELDs in several of the 1:8" barrels, knowing that bullet stabilization was going to be iffy, and the results were not spectacular...)

They were on sale. I figured they might be worth a try. I am wanting to run a plastic tipped bullet because I've had too varied performance from hpbt bullets.
What bullet seemed to be the best in terms of velocity vs bc in your rifles?

Be aware that they may not hold up. I've seen reports of 80g and 90g bullets blowing up at speeds approaching 2,900, but they were in faster twist .223 barrels (1:6.5 and 1:7)

I'm successfully running a 1:7 Shilen .223 match barrel on a Savage BVSS with 90 VLDs, but I'm keeping speeds in the 2,750-ish range (I know, boring, but they are laser-like in their accuracy)

I would give Berger a call and talk to them about the limits of performance for these bullets when pushed to the 3k level. Maybe talk to Shilen as well and see what they recommend

I’m partial to Savage. Owned & built them since I was 18. My current bench rifle is a custom built. But it’s 260Rem.

Started with a used Model 10 in 243 Win, picked up online for a song & dance. Stripped her down to bare Action and “Ghetto blueprinted”. Wears a 26” Shilen match barrel, 1:8 twist, host of PT&G parts including a fitted bolt head, and my fully modded Accutrigger. Housed in an aluminum chassis and my own designed & machined shoulder stock. It’s far more accurate than I am!

You can do the same with a Remage. Like I said I’m just partial with an extensive history. Different strokes. A 22-250 will be a screamer! I believe you can get away with 1:7 for the 90gr VLD’s. But the 1:6.5 is the recommended. Problem is I think going that fast limits you to that weight only! To be honest, I prefer 1:8 as the best, all around twist. It will stable up to 80gr nicely, but also the lightest bullets without without sending them into a DEATH SPIN!

Good luck whichever you choose.

Man, I'd really love more details on that.

ETA - just as an FYI, my 75gr loads run out at ~3300fps using H4895.

EATA - because I'm using a Savage short action with a 3.0" magazine body, I can seat the 75gr bullets out well past SAAMI spec. According to QL, that helps keeps pMax in check.

I have a 1-12 22-250 for light bullets already. It is amazing to about 400 yards. But falls off quickly after that.
I'm hoping to have this pick up where the other stops.

I'm planning on running IMR4064.
It looks like you're getting better velocity than I was hoping for.

I'll look into those. I'm planning on getting some engraving done anyway. So I'll be doing finish work.

Thanks for posting this Bill, kinda where I was heading with my earlier post but without personal experience or these links I stopped short.

Mine is an 8 twist. From what others were saying on the links. It should be ok if it stabilizes them.
I'm not set on a certain bullet or velocity. If they fail. I'll give the rest to someone who can use them.
