If you were building a fast twist 22-250. Which way would you go?
I don't want a detachable magazine. A hinged floorplate is nice though.
Also which barrel maker?
This is going to too be a heavy barreled varmint rig with a 1-8 twist barrel and thumbhole stock.
I'm building it as a memorial for my Grandpa. It's going to be everything he liked. Except he ran a 1-14 twist.

Edited for spelling...

I like the 22-250 tho think I would do the Ackley to help with the case stretch. Like to try a 22-243 one day but probably go 22cm.

For barrel of first look at McGowen, for the next step up in price I'd just go right to bartlin perhaps a good round to try that new unicorn barrel they got now.

Cool your doing it as a memorial for your grandpa,

I thought about the cm and the AI. But he was a huge 22-250 fan.
I'm more into the high speed and low drag bullets. So I figured a 1-8 would work well.

Ya I figured when I read down it's what he liked, a fast twist 250 would be cool. If you don't have an action the defiance start at about $850. I'd like to get one from them but can never decide what to build and when I do don't have the money lol.

That's a little steep. I'm trying to stay under $2000. If I buy a bare action. I have to buy the floor plate, magazine and screws.

Including or not including optics?

It's fairly easily doable if your not including scope in that budget.
If you are I'd find a used 700V, or VLS, and just yank the tube and install a Shaw CM barrel. Should keep the cost for the complete rifle under 1k, maybe significantly less.

Probably not including optics. I have more decent scopes than rifles.
I figured a Boyd's stock, about 500 for a barrel. If I go Remington I like the Timney 2 stage. If I stay Savage. The accutrigger is easily stoned to my liking.
I would like to include good mounts in my build. I also will need to pillar bed the stock.
If the action needs cleaned up. I can call in favors to get the lathe work done.

I own 15 or so remington 700, winchester, Browning etc. I own one savage and it was pretty much free to me. So i used to prefer Remington at least. Nowadays I would not buy a Remington rifle. Ive seen nothing good with their rifles in 20 years. Inconsistent accuracy has always plagued them. They are pretty but i expect to have to do work to get them to shoot decent. For a cheap, cheap looking, ugly barrel nut assembled, floppy stocked, gun just to shoot or carry id take a savage. I also hate the accu-trigger. Ive never seen one i liked...but ive yet to see one shoot over MOA with most any ammo either. I have quite a pretty valuable remington that simply can't do MOA without a gunsmith. I also hate a detachable mag on a bolt gun. The hinged box used to be nice to me but now I can take it or leave it

My varmint gun is the savage 12fv.

If you don't already own a rifle, in a stock you're fond of, with a trigger you love, then I wouldn't use either of your choices.

I Remage'd (Criterion from NSS) my R700 already in a nice stock and trigger; by the time I was done (barrel, tools, true bolt-face, fix marginal primary extraction) I'd spent the value of the factory rifle.

Starting without a free (sunk-cost) rifle. . . buy a Tikka, a used Cooper, or a Kimber.

I have built 450 Bushmasters using the Remage method and a pure Savage build. Both had McGowan barrels.

I prefer the Remington with your choice of aftermarket trigger. The accutrigger is not the best but it is good enough where the added cost of upgrading it would not be worth it.

If it makes a difference, there is a local shop near me that has a Remington 40X in 22-250 for around 1100 (I think) Probably is not the twist rate your looking for but if you would like to inquire about it, shoot me a PM.

That's the main issue with buying a new one. If I can find the twist rate I want. Then it has a short barrel.

If you want a 3-position safety that locks the bolt, Savage is the answer. If you want better options for stocks and triggers, then Remington is the choice.

Still a work in progress. Have the same test loads sitting here. Work, then Covid, then heat, then work again ... then heat, Covid, and work ... and now my range is closed for 60 days for maintenance: lead reclamation, berm reconstruction, etc. o_O
Sounds like my Weatherby load workup. I've been trying to get to it for 2 years. The fact that it shoots factory ammo so well slowed me down. But I'm out of factory now.

I did a Remage in 223 a few years back and have been pretty happy with it, but can't speak about Savage as I have never owned one.

The thing I like about Remington is there is so much out there for them. My understanding is that Savage makes several different actions which make it more difficult to get components that will work together.

Here is my parts list-

Remington ADL action
Wilson Light Varmint 1:7 twist SS barrel machined by Barrel Brothers and uses their nut
Tuned Walker style trigger
Boyds At One stock
Magpul DBM & Magazine

I inletted the stock for the Magpul DBM but Boyds now offers it as an option.
