Mo,

The race is on, dude. Did you see that wicked tight target from Frank in the other post? Holy Moses in a Rowboat. Get your calipers.....

Frank, seriously, that was a great target. And on a honking Eotech. I'd send one of those photos to Marlin.

Well, I got out over the weekend and had a pretty good target... until I cross-shot it!! So, I shot another one! It's pretty good, but I don't think as good as John's. Dogone it! I'll just have to go back out to the range and shoot some more. Wish I had newer eyes and an older gun instead of both being "high mileage!" LOL!

Well, it's supposed to rain tonight, tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday.

Monday is supposed to be beautiful.

I'm going to try to shoot the contest.

I wonder if Leupold has shipped my scope yet?

(Still no reply to the email I sent them)

Has anybody sent in their targets yet?

A couple of pards at my club came out an punched some holes in the shamrock shoot targets this last weekend. JW with had his 39 and SP had a Henry with the octagon barrel which I must admit looks very nice and looks like it'll be competitive too.

5-spot

Listen up, people.

I know that most of you are
treating this match as sport.

But let's remember this:
5-spot are dangerous beasts.
(Ever seen death by paper cuts
caused by a 5-spot? It's not pretty. )

They can come out of no where,
and cover 25 yds in less than 3 sec.

You need to know how to quell them.

Fortunately, they are thin skinned.
A .22 will take them down
with proper shot placement.

As always, it's all about shot placement.

Now, just to make sure you've got a good search image
(that situational awareness thing), here's what
a 5-spot looks like at 25 yds through a scope.

They can appear even smaller with irons.

Remember: 25 yds in less than 3 sec ... :uhoh:

HEY!

I got an email from Leupold at 1am this morning!

They have shipped my scope, and it's scheduled to be delivered on the 12th.

Six days to get here... must be shipping it by burro or something. Wasn't the Pony Express faster than that?

I have high hopes that it will arrive in good working condition, and my rifle will shoot it's best groups yet when it's installed.

Maybe just maybe I can shoot this contest in two classes. COOL!

Maybe just maybe I can do better than last place now...

(Still no reply to my first email)

Now the weather man is saying 30 percent chance of rain Monday.

I sure do want to shoot some circles!

Anybody out there know how to do a rain dance or something to keep it dry?

Hi all,

The match concludes in just over three weeks, so everyone should be circling dates on the calendars now to whack them dirty little circles hard. About five rounds per circle will do nicely.

Frank, best of luck on the rain shooting. I am *so* looking forward to your range report on the EoTech enabled 39A.

Mo, Tell JW that his 39A shooting will improve if he shoots with the rifle rotated 90 deg to the right, so the sights are on the top of the rifle, rather than shooting 'urban' style.... :)

I did get out this afternoon just before dark with enough time to shoot an embarrassing target. I'm going to run this one on my Browning BL-22 with open sights shooting Winchester Dynapoints or CCI Mini-Mags even though the sights are adjusted for POI being 1" above POA @ 25yds.

This evening was a terrible time for me with the cold wind making my eyes water and body shiver. Hey, just an excuse for a lousy target, eh? I was on a wobbly table with a pillow from my lady's couch, to boot!

It's supposed to be mostly sunny with a high near 65 Sunday, and raining on Monday. I'm going to try a serious target Sunday and see what I can do.

Fast, did you see the pictures Angus posted of his shoot? Now he had a real :p weather excuse.

I reckon weather like that is about as common as an ugly Cowboy Cheerleader huh?

Okay... so I'd been looking forward to shooting another target or two all week. The only time I can get to the range is Saturday morning... Some event was scheduled, so it was closing at 3. The plan was to get there first thing - at 10 or so.

Saturday morning dawned very cold. By 9:30-ish it was snowin' and a 20-mph wind was blowin'. So I went to the range and shot in a doggone blizzard! What a hoot! I was the only nut out there. Had to use 5-6 clicks left on the peeps to compensate for the wind. The target was often obscured. Even under the partial shelter, snow got into all my stuff. Shot okay for the conditions but managed to shoot one square 3 times and the one next to it 7 LOL!! It was cold and they were the last two circles - think my brain got a chill!!

The snow melted in the warm truck, so had to dry out everything and oil up the rifle. Darn! Guess I'll have to go back next Saturday!

Maybe we should have an adverse weather classification. Shootr, Angus and Fast are all doing some hard core shootin'. More proof on how much fun shooting a levergun is -- guys will even risk hypothermia to shoot! :D

Now the weatherman is saying 80 percent chance of rain tomorrow.

I don't care. I'm going.

I WILL shoot the contest tomorrow.

If I have to turn in a soggy target, then so be it.

My EOTECH is certified waterproof to 30 feet. My 39 is waterproof even deeper than that.

A little rain won't hurt either one.

My scope is supposed to be here Wednesday, and I intend to shoot the scoped class next weekend.

Well, I'll be working today and you'll be at the range so however it shakes out you've got the better deal. Good luck on the weather.

DJR

Frank, keep an eye on the sky. My Texas weather map is showing rain across most of the state. :D

Shots fired.

I got to the range at 9:00AM opening time. It was overcast, but otherwise good conditions.

I got my targets hung, and the firing line went hot at about 9:15.

39eotech002-3.jpg

It went downhill from there.

by 9:30, the clouds moved in and it got dark.

By 9:45, the wind started blowing.

By 10:00 the temp dropped to about 50 degrees.

By 10:15, we were packing up and it was raining.

I shot one complete target. I spent a few minutes trying to get my groups centered and then shot.

I doubt that I've got a winner here, but it was fun shooting, and I'm still going to do the Magnified class next week.

As for the EOTECH, well... It's not a scope. While it's good for me because it doesn't require looking at three things at one time, it's really not any better than iron sights.

It is accurate. The whole idea behind this sight is speed. It was designed to help get a quick, accurate shot off in any light condition.

While it's not ideal for shooting contests, it would work nicely for popping raccoons out of trees in the middle of the night.

It also just might be the answer for running squirrels.

While the sight looks all wrong on the rifle, it does work pretty good.

The only drawback I see in using it on the model 39 is it's price.

At $375.00 a copy, the EOTECH is priced almost twice what I payed for my 3-9 Leupold.

Assuming that the parallax adjustment improves the performance of the scope, it would seem like a better deal to buy the Leupold.

I'm going to put the EOTECH back where it belongs, and leave it there.
