S&W M&P 9mm versus HK P2000 or Glock 34 for range and IDPA?

I'm interested in a new range gun and am considering IDPA competition. I've narrowed it down to these three polymer guns and am looking for input. I've heard the HK and S&W are a bit softer shooting than the Glock 34 but the Glock is certainly a proven design. I'd be going with the DA/SA V3 of the HK, if that helps. Right now I'm leaning towards the S&W M&P, due to customer service and it's an American company. All input appreciated. :)

Well they're all good guns. I prefer HK. They fit me best, but that might not be the same for you. The G34 definitly has an edge for competition. I'm sure you've heard it a thousand times, but go with the one that feels the best in your hand and points naturally for you.

It really is how you shoot, not anyone else. IPDA is fun and will help you become more smooth with a firearm's operation, but it more a geometry brain-teaser than real world.

Shoot the gun that works best in your hands, not what works for others.

I'd go with the H&K, but that is a personal choice due to the trigger.

M&P 9mm

Went to the range today with my M&P40 with the goal to compare it to some others. Rented a HK USP Compact in 9mm (they didn't have a .40). While both are excellent guns, I could shoot the M&P much better, as it fit my hands well. Suprisingly, the felt recoil was very similar for both with WWB. I also could not get used to the DA/SA trigger on the HK. I seem to do better with a SAO or DAO trigger.

Also rented a Kahr KP40. What a handful! I did not like the DAO trigger on the Kahr as it had a very long travel, and since it was so snappy, second shots took longer.

Of course, IMHO, YMMV

For whats its worth... I had an XD-9 5". I now use an M&P 9mm, and a Glock 17 for IDPA. Like them all with just a tad more favor going to the M&P overall. Like the ergos on the M&P the best but trigger on the Glock the best (smooth take up and crisp break w/o any creep). I have similar results shooting either one. M&P has just a tad lighter felt recoil. I had problems not engaging the tiny grip safety on the XD. I have large hands and with the thumbs forward combat grip the spongy web of my hand didn't quite get it depressed all the time. Drove me nuts. Smaller hands seem to tuck right up tight. For me the M&P really has such a natural comfortable feel to it. If I could only own one it would be the M&P. Thank goodness thats not the case. Variety is the spice of life. :D

+1 for the H&K P2000.

Love the ergos, shoots great, proven platform, accurate, reliable, great recoil reduction system. Hard to beat, IMO. Price gives Glock the edge, but otherwise it pales in comparison, IMO.

I'm currently shooting a G34 for IDPA, and it is a fantastic choice for that, I mean it was basically designed for that purpose

My one major beef however, is that it is too large for me to carry comfortably, so I'm "downsizing" to a G19. I'm not a good enough shooter to really achieve the ultimate differences in most modern pistols, but I can definitely feel a big grip digging into my side:neener:

That being said, its hard to be the Glock reliability, accuracy, and simplicity for a purely range/game gun.

I shoot IDPA to have fun...shoot what you have. If I had to choose from the 3 options, I'd go P2000 1st and then maybe the G34. As a 'game gun' the G34 might be my 1st choice just because it's well suited for IDPA. My first choice is the P2000 just because the P2000 w / LEM in 9mm would make a nice IDPA gun & would be well suited for daily carry too.

I prefer the M&P; its tailorable ergonomics make it easy to fit to YOU. The fact that it's the least expensive of the three simply means more money for ammo. :)
