can someone recommend good pair of safety glasses for shooting?
trap/rifle/pistol and BP. mostly target but some hunting. the safety glasses i see at most sporting goods store seem really flimsy. commercial sunglasses feel correct but are either too dark or i am not sure of their protection.
I am also thinking of prescription lenses for them in the future.
how and what do i choose?

For prescription ... nothing beats Wiley-X (be ready for sticker shock though, they are NOT cheap)
If you need safety glasses for a lot of activities, they're worth it, I have an industrial job, I shoot frequently, and I ride a motorcycle. I still cringe at the cost of those glasses with Rx lenses and "Transitions" lenses, though.

If you don't need the prescription lenses, there are really good safety glasses out there and they're not even that expensive. Get out of the sporting goods store, and look at industrial work-wear shops and websites, the lightweight single-piece front with flat earpieces can be found in all tint levels and often under $5 ... and they're tougher than they look, just make sure they're rated ANSI Z.87 and/or milspec.

You want flat ear/temple pieces because you might want/need to wear earmuffs over top of your glasses.

Great selection and great price. bifocals for $11, tinted as well for the same price. I've used their glasses for work as well for a couple of years now.
I usually get the Elvex 200 in bifocal and today picked up an Olympic 30-06 bifocal tinted in amber for shooting.

just make sure they're rated ANSI Z.87 and/or milspec.
ANSI Z.87 is an older standard, Z.87+ is the new industry standard and is much tougher, most of the name brands like 3M or AO Safety meet this.

Milspec. MIL-PRF-31013 is much tougher than either ANSI standard, but the lenses are thick and heavy, relatively speaking.

gofastman, you're right about Z.87+ ... but it is somewhat beyond the scope for someone shopping for safety glasses for the first time
