So a while back I was in the local Academy & I realized that .308 seems to be more available & more reasonably priced than most other centerfire rifle ammunition other than .556/.223. I found myself thinking if I had a .308 I might do more rifle shooting. Since than I have found myself browsing online looking at and reading about various budget rifles (Ruger American, Remington 783, Savage Axis, etc.). The other night I was looking at different versions of the Ruger American & I stumbled across a deal for the Savage Apex Hunter with an included Vortex Crossfire scope chambered for .308 for $519.99. This was I believe about $50 dollars more than an unscoped Ruger American Predator.

I realize the Vortex isn't the best/nicest scope but I have looked through one before & it was good enough for a start. If I were to buy I would probably wind up changing the scope at some time.

Not sure if I will buy or not but how would one of these stack up against the budget rifles? I would appreciate your opinions & experiences.

That is a good price on a 110 series Savage rifle.

Pretty much what I was thinking though it is probably about their least expensive model. I just don't know much about Savage. I only own 2 centerfire bolt actions, an old push feed USRA model 70 .30-06 & a Spanish Mauser. I was thinking the 110 (even an inexpensive one) might be a better rifle for not a lot more money.

As far as the scope is concerned, My Savage 110 Storm XP in .223 came with the Vortex Crossfire II 3-9 X40 supposedly bore sighted. Indeed it was, a couple of inches to the right and about 4 inches high. No problems zeroing my range and hunting loads. This is my first rifle/scope and couldn`t be more pleased. A good friend and hunting buddy who`s probably forgotten more about rifles than I`ll ever know was REALLY impressed with the Accutrigger trigger weight straight out of the box. If I were looking for a .308, rifle/scope combo, at $520, I`m pretty sure I wouldn`t hesitate. Savage rifles just shoot.

I have a 110 tactical in 6.5 cm and very happy with it. Have also sighted in several Axis for Sil and friends in various calibers including 308. They shoot great and dependable right out of the box. All the ones I've shot have been MOA or very close to it at 100yds.

Ttt. I'm in the exact same boat

I still haven't bought anything. I wound up holding off. Reading more reviews. I am still looking but haven't made a decision yet. The Patriot you posted about looks interesting. I've got to figure out what I want.
