Savage 12FV 308 rifle

I'm looking at a Savage 12FV 308 rifle, though I have one concern. I know this rifle is relatively heavy, and I suspect when using a bipod, the free floated barrel will touch the stock. Any way to avoid this, and how badly will it really affect accuracy? Secondly, anybody have this rifle, and have any experience with its accuracy?

Maybe you could strengthen the forearm. Like, putting rails inside of it, to avoid having the forearm touch the barrel.

No, it won't touch the barrel, but it gets close in hot weather. I have one in .243 which is slightly heavier due to the smaller bore diameter, and never had a problem, even in the Texas heat. However I did put a Sharpshooter Supply LVT stock on mine just because I liked it.



And mine shoots in the .3's on a regular basis, as will a .308 most likely. You may have to play with different ammo to find what it really likes, or handload like me.

The factory stocks are crap.

On my 12FV .223, I replaced the factory stock with B&C and love it.

Yet I was able to get superb groups out of an older 110FP in .308 with only the factory stock.

I've gotten great groups with factory stocks. They just don't really work with a bipod, and you can stiffen the forearm.

i just shot my first real not so ragged one hole group (4 at 100) yesterday with my second batch of handloads, found the one it likes haha. i have a 12 low profile varminter in 308. I wanted a mcmillian, but cant afford it yet. the factory stock has worked so far for me off a bi pod.

That is a good gun for the price. My buddy just bought one... Cuz I made him ... We've installed a nice Nikon 3x9x40 scope on it and used 130 grain Corbon rounds to break it in. At 100m he was grouping .44 avarage 5 shots.
this was with the factory stock!
Now your question, I would glassbed this Savage regardless...
