Got to shoot my new savage mk II FVSR this weekend.

A couple of notes:

I was just shooting at 25 yards and was shooting suppressed.

I was trying to zero my scope, but I have a garbage scope on it right now. It's a Simmons 22 mag scope.

Anyway, accuracy was there (forgot to take pictures of the targets) and that accutrigger is very nice.

But I was having some extraction issues. Every couple of rounds, it wouldn't extract the fired round. I'd tried dropping the magazine, so as not to cause a double feed, and send the bolt home in hopes of the extractors (it has dual extractors) grabbing onto the fired round the second time. This worked a few times. But eventually I had to use my knife any pry the casing out. And eventually, it started not extracting every time I fired a round. So I stopped shooting that rifle and moved onto some other guns I had brought to the range.

I don't know why I was having issues though.

I don't love the magazines on the mk II, I feel the fit to the receiver is somewhat sloppy, though I never had an issue with it feeding.

I also hadn't cleaned the gun since I got it, so maybe there was factory oil in the chamber...

I was shooting aquila ammo. Maybe they were a little waxy, I couldn't tell.

Maybe some back pressure from the suppressor? I don't know if that can happen on a bolt gun.

I need to give it a good clean, and maybe lightly polish the chamber with some super high grit sandpaper.

What are your thoughts? Anybody have similar issues as me?

I have a mark II TR, I assume they’re similar. I also use a lot of Aguila SuperExtra 40 grain solids. Never an issue so I’d pull the bolt and clean all gunk off paying close attention to the extractor then lubricate lightly. Sounds like you’ve mostly done this can’t imagine you need to polish anything. This is a 22 LR?

I've had 2 pretty much like th OPs. They were tack drivers but both had extractor problems. It's an annoyance. I contacted Savage about it around 2005 about mt Savae z.ako Shark and they sent me a new extractor. I recall that seemed to work. I should do something about my current one.

The new extractors they sent you worked? Were they easy to replace?

I have a couple MK2'S. 1 is older no accu-trigger. My newest one has the accu-trigger. I dont recall the letters on them. They are nice shooting rifles. I also have an A22 I hate the rotary mag in it. It's a pain the butt to load. I wish there was a speed loader for it.

Your extraction issues are why I got rid of mine and don’t recommend them. Especially as a suppressor host with increased back pressure and fouling exacerbating the poor excuse of extraction design.

What I recommend doing is clean it up and replace it with a CZ or Bergara.

If you are a glutton for punishment you can take the extractor c-clip spring off and pinch it closed a bit to tension it more and put it on after cleaning it every 100 rounds or so.

By the way mine was VERY accurate but terrible in the reliability.

Thanks for the reply. I sure hope mine doesn't continue to have the horrible reliability issue. I'll contact savage and see if they can help before I sell it.

I really like the gun. Its accurate, the trigger is great and it didn't break the bank.

An extra "C" spring over the original on the extractor will cure extraction problems. The accu-trigger on mine was junk. Couldn't be adjusted at all and it would hang up about ever third or fourth shot. A Rifle Basix trigger finally solved that problem. What I couldn't solve was it's poor accuracy and I finally quit wasting money trying and sold it.

After watching some YouTube videos on it. I took apart the bolt and took out the extractor, (turns out there is only one after all) and ran a fine jewelers file over it to sharpen it up just a bit. Cleaned out the bolt face a bit and reinstalled the extractor. And reassembled the gun.

I'm going to order another C clip and an extra extractor to have on hand.

I'd like to test it again now. It'll give me a reason to hit the range again.

One obviously shouldn't have to do that to a new rifle. But the truth is Mk II fvsr is in a price range of it's own at around $250. The next option up would be a Ruger American Rimfire, but to get one with a threaded barrel is around $400-$500, the CZ is even more expensive.

The whole point was to have a cheap(er) plinking rifle with a good trigger, and decent accuracy that I could use as a suppressor host. That's what is so appealing to the savage. Though I guess you get what you pay for in the end...

I keep hearing and reading about the MkII magazine issues but I have not had any problems with all of the magazines I own. I have several 5 round and several 10 round stainless steel mags for my 22lr BTVLSS and the same number of 5 and 10 round blued mags for my 17m2 GVL.

The extract issues seem to have started in the last couple of years. The last MkII I bought was my BTVLSS in 2018 and it doesn't have any issues what so ever.

I bought my rifle less than 2 years ago. The magazine came apart when I tried to load the very first round. After reading some reviews, didn't bother buying another factory one, but waited for the ones I linked above to be in stock.

The difference is night and day: Laser cut and welded vs crimped.

A family member recently purchased this exact model. Based on the almost mythic level of accuracy we were seeing online we were pretty hyped to shoot some great groups with it. Unfortunately accuracy was only so-so, far less than we'd been led to expect. Not awful, but not great.

Even worse, the extractor wasn't sharp at all. The rounded off profile of the extractor meant that the brass would get stuck in the chamber after firing. It was easy enough to remove with a knife or screwdriver, but it was still unacceptable for a new rifle. We contacted Savage and they required that the rifle be sent in on my family member's own dime, despite it being a brand new rifle. They wouldn't even send us the extractor to do the repair ourselves.

I consider this a fail on both the rifle's build quality and Savage's customer support and likely won't be recommending their products in the future.

Yeah, that is unacceptable. How much would it cost them to just ship out the parts? Just a few bucks I'm sure.

A new rifle, no matter the cost, should run out of the box with no issues.

That's all kind of a bummer.

It really is.

It's a nice little rifle, and I like it. But this issue is super annoying. I'll fix it myself with what I've learned from YouTube, but that's because I'm too cheap to buy a more expensive rifle, and I don't want to go through the hassle of selling it.

Though I can't say I'd recommend it at this point.

I bought a MKII TR new last year. It bobbled a few times on extraction, but that was in the first couple mags. Seems to have gone away after that.

Magazine has been fine but feels cheap.

The rifle shoots decent but hasnt been really tested yet. Just roughed it in and cycle checked w CCI Blazer. Got SK Standard Plus for whenever the rain quits.

CC 455 got a Leupold Freedom EFR 3-9x yesterday ( used scope ). Doesnt have the shadow my first one ( new ) did.

It did well w reg SK Rifle Match but am out now so will test it and the Savage w the Plus. Will report if extraction or mag issues happen.

If the Savage runs well and likes the SK then Illl upgrade the trigger. Dont care for the Accutrigger.
