BATS...

The best part of bats is if you get pulled over the police ask very few questions about a bat in the trunk if you have a glove and ball accompanying it.

When I was in college and firearms were not allowed on campus I kept a short aluminum bat in my room for "emergencies" I think this might be what some are calling a T ball bat. Excellent weapon next to a gun or sword probably my favorite weapon.

Fast and deadly...If I were faced with a knife and no gun I would chose a full size aluminum bat...Make sure and maintain balance or you could be easily disarmed after a full thrown swing.

1. disarm assailant (arm or hand holding weapon)
2. Imobilise assailant (Knees go for the knees sweet pain)
3. destroy assailant (headshot at your disacretion)

Just my 2 cents. I miss TFL never posted but visited a lot. Will miss greatly.

I carry a short "wombat", aluminum t-ball, head heavy, bat, in my jeep. If you know any martial arts, it can be used in numerous ways as a weapon, short of the home run swing. ;) A pair of 3" blade loppers serve as backup. At night of course they are carried with a maglite in a modified Harries. ;)

Seriously, all of my inner city friends carry at least a small bat, baton or hammer in a get to quick area for self defense.

Knives and guns are another question.:)

Have you ever seen a tire checker? They are about 20 or so inches long made of wood in the shape of a bat. There is a piece of metal about 2 inches wide surrounding the end. On the handle side there is a rope that you can put around your wrist. They are used by truckers to tap their tires and listen for lower pitch in a tire, which would indicate a low tire. Pretty handy when you have 18 or more tires to check.

Now I used to carry one in my pickup since I believed they were legal for anyone. I was at the State Police many years ago cuz a deer ran into my truck door and I had to have a report from the police for my insurance. The officer was checking for hair on the door and when he opened it there was my tire checker lying on the floor of my truck. “What’s this?†the officer said smiling. “Oh that’s a tire checker I use it to check the air pressure in my tires.†“Yeah right.†says the officer. “I don’t want to see this in your vehicle again.†So now I have a large broken crescent wrench lying on the floor
:D

I swear that my eyes have been opened and reopened by this thread..

It seems however, anything (in the right hands) is a good weapon...

I'm surprised however, the favored two weapons of my era (the bugs bunny/tom and jerry era) have not been mentioned!

#1 ~ Anvils
#2 ~ Banana peels!!!

:D :p

A lightweight bat can allow you to control a fairly wide swath of your homestead. Things you might want to practice:

1-Keeping the bat 'in play'---it's the downtime between movements that will make you vulnerable. You should train to keep the weapon moving constantly.
2-Learn the 'points' as well as the usual striking surfaces. Close up, it's hard to swing a bat, but the points can be used for impact, range control and pain compliance.
3-Identify the areas of your home that will give an advantage to your impact weapon and a disadvantage to anything else. You'd rather confront an attacker in the middle of a room, while a knife-wielding attacker would rather meet you in a hallway or a doorway.

Good luck,
Larry
