Self-Defense.. with a bat instead of a gun.

Carbon fiber stocks. No question 'bout it :D

And a tac sling so she can transition to ninja stars. Ahh sooo!!!

Speaking seriously now: yes, when you swing a bat, some fool can step inside your range. But the counter for that is to STEP WHILE SWINGING. Every single swing should happen with footwork, usually back and sideways, sometimes forward and sideways. That'll clobber the SOB as he tries it.

If you miss, fine, at least you're the hell out of the way and can try again.

The other thing is, your first connect or two should be to the legs or back of the knees of the opponent. Slow the sucker down, then clobber him. With an armed criminal assailant, perfection is one shot to the upper calf to buckle him, another to the back of the skull, with footwork rotating to the outside on EACH stroke. You step AWAY FROM his weapon, usually to your right but if he's a southpaw, go the other way. Do it fast, don't hold back, don't show mercy, because wolves run in packs.

There's always one more bad guy that you ain't spotted yet.

You can try swinging the bat the other way around. The other end is extrememly lightweight and can be swung around faster, therefore giving you quicker follow up shots. Not to mention that the edge can cause some serious cuts to a fellow. Once you get a couple good hits with the light end, turn it around and clobber 'em properly.

No, your grip strength will suck on the big end.

Grab the small end with BOTH hands "Katana style" and whack low while moving. Once you connect, go high for the finish.

I think I'd go with rattan...

It's lighter, swings easier and is more maneuverable than a bat. That said, a fully swung bat is a bear to block! That's why I usually try to have a coat, preferably leather, with me as it can be thrown into the bat to take a bit of speed off the swing. (After typing that, I just realized how ridiculous that may sound/read)

I don't know how the knife laws are there, but it'd be something good to have in case the intruder tries to grapple the bat from you. The Cold Steel battle hammer comes to mind as one of my favorite impact weapons. Plus, you've got that spike that can penetrate many forms of armor. Talk about getting medieval!

If you really like bats, you should also consider those Native American gun stock clubs, a la "Last of the Mohicans."

That reminds me, I should put in my order for a La Gana Vietnam Tomahawk...;)

D.N.S,

The reason that the "tactical self defense bat" is better is because it's balanced for specifically quick swings, and the balance is very high, for use with a "choke grip" on it, instead of a traditional baseball bat grip. It's light, and the front end is fairly light as well, so you don't need a lot of wrist strength to wield it..

The bat is light enough to swing back and forth, and as the arc made is smaller, it's much harder to "step into the arc circle" after I swing, as the return swing is very very quick. Also, I can swing it easily with one hand, which will probably be the case in some situations.

It's well designed for the specific purpose of self-defense.

The Aluminum Alloy is very very hard, harder that most body parts, I assure you, and while it doesn't have the weight of most baseball bats, I have to believe that if I swing it, it will be a B** to block.

Get yourself one of these. The Estwing rock hammer is one of the primo close combat weapons available. You can deliver a crushing blow with the hammer face or completely pierce a skull or sternum with the pick. If you want to dedicate it completely to self-defense, you take a file and sharpen up the exposed steel part of the shaft. That has a nifty way of causing an opponent who grabs it to immediately let go again. They can also be used for more mundane pursuits, of course.

The rock hammer pick is awesome! Definitely on the list for consideration.

I don't care what I use, bare hands if need be, but if I do catch the thief, he will not have all his limbs intact, that much I can promise. Having learned a little bit of submission wrestling, I can break a few bones..

As far as death for the guy if I catch him; no way, not going to kill the guy unless he forces me to. I need him to SUFFER, and I need him to go around, in his wheelchair, telling little kids not to steal, or else they might end up with broken legs and arms, and remain in a wheelchair forever... I need him to be great advertisement for why not to steal..

I was at a local Target store and noticed they were clearing out some bats. I ended up getting a couple of 25" t-ball bats. These things swing pretty well, and are especially quick when I choke up to the very top of the grip. choking up that high, one can swing the bat one-handed. I'd feel comfortable if this were my only weapon.

Twoblink,

Following your situation, hope all goes well.

Take a look at Fairbairn's stick fighting on Don Rearic's page (actually the link is to gutterfighting site linked to Rearic's site)

http://www.gutterfighting.org/fstick.html

He also has some words about cane fighting, sjamboks, etc.

Stay safe.

Adios

Sounds like a "fish-whomper" to me. :) A friend in California keeps one in his truck. Small enough to wield effectively, even in the cab. If questioned by a police officer: "oh, I've been looking for that since my last trip to the lake!"

You crack somebody with an aluminum bat, and it'll go "whomp!" that's for sure! :p

Wow, this thread is a real eye-opener and a crack-up at the same time.

May I suggest the Sjambok? It's like a "whipping rod". I am considering getting one of these buggers myself. It must be terrible not being able to own guns.

I know Cold Steel Makes a synthetic Sjambok, here is their website:

http://www.coldsteel.com/sjambok.html

Since I'm also a GlockTalker, I am required to suggest the use of A-Grip on your TacBat.

You should also try to mount a Knight's Armament RAS so you can attach forward pistol grips, lasers, flashlights, and a door-breaching shotgun on your bat:p

OK, you all have reinforced what I already knew, you all with your weapons suggestions are scary; you are all freaks!!! That's why I love you all :D

The torpedo is awesome!! I went to the "self-defense" store two days ago, and am thinking of buying a whipout baton. The torpedo is scary though, but that means I can hit the guy to almost 20 yards out... And I can only imagine what kind of hole it will leave... Gives the whole 9mm vs. 45 debate a whole new look...

Sjambok, awesome awesome weapon. I say a "demonstration" with it before... One of the rodeo women used one.. Split a banana clean in two, like a knife cut. Did the cigarette trick etc... Of course, she then did all the same tricks with a 30' whip, but that's a different story altogether..

Time to take another visit to the self-defense store...

Thanks, guys, after buying a t-ball bat, now I have to go to cold-steel to get a Sjambok! Great...just great...:cuss:

The laws after the new year here in Taiwan is that blades of ANY length is ok, as long as they are bladed only on one side. The exception is the butterfly knife, which still remains illegal.

So I'd get a single headed axe instead of a double; that way I can carry it around with me daily ;)

Gf wants a Sjambok badly now... :what:

Nothing like a good WARCLUB!

Bats, Shelelieghs (sp), Batons, just plain old Sticks - all are good for Self- Defense against edged weapon assaults. There's one thing I'm surprised no one has mentioned = Canes!
Check this site out: www.canemasters.com
One of the few self-defense weapons I know of that you can get a Dr's prescription to pack;) :D
