Analysis: My favorite. The Texas Star. No. Really. Favorite. Yep. The trick with the Texas Star is to shoot top to bottom, as some of our fellow squad shooters learned the hard way, no matter how many times I said to shoot top down during the walk through, before each shooter got into the box, and again as they targeted the Texas Star. I beginning to realize that a few folks perhaps thought that I was purposefully pawning bad advice to better my own chances, but this was not the case. At least, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

1. This stage had a lot of hard cover (orange netting) and white "no-shoots" covering a many targets, and the angles of the hard cover and no-shoots meant that many of the targets were only visible from certain angles. So the shooter couldn't just start at one end, and shoot all the targets in order to the other end where the Texas Star was. The shooter had to engage a one or two targets, move (passing a target not yet shot), engage another one or two targets, but then turn back a few degrees to engage the target the shooter had to pass a moment before. Because the shooter's start position was in the middle of the shooting area, the shooter really couldn't effectively run to the far side, then run down the line shooting all the targets in one strafing run from that angle, stopping at the end, reloading, and running back to the other end in a different angle strafing run, before finishing up with the Texas Star.    I call this kind of exercise "go fish" or the "memory card game" because you have to keep track of which targets have been engaged and which ones still require shots. Shoot a target that you've already shot, and you're wasting time. But skip a target that you THOUGHT you already shot, well, then you lose out on points plus incur -10 point mike penalties. In the video, you can see that as I moved down the line, I paused on a couple of targets trying to remember if I already shot them and looking for holes to confirm. Now, my eyesight ain't all that great, so I couldn't see the tiny 9mm minor holes, so I was relying mostly on memory and angle analysis to determine if it was likely that I shot the target from a different angle or not.
2. I again got lucky, cleaned the Texas Star with 5 shots, no extra shots, for the first time ever. Another huge personal breakthrough. The first time I shot a stage with a Texas Star, I went through THREE f*$#(!@% mags, that's 30+ rounds, trying to clean that thing because I started from bottom to top and that damned thing really started spinning on me, and ran out of ammo later in the stage and had like 7 "did not engage" targets for 14 mike penalties on top of not getting points for 14 missed shots. I'm still twice as slow as the overall winning time, and about 40% slower than Taran (i.e. Taran was almost twice as fast as me), but decent accuracy and a clean shoot (no mikes) really helped me out.
3. Kevlarman shot a clean shoot, no mikes, and even though his time was mid-pack for our squad, solid accuracy and no mikes propelled him up the rankings.
4. Black Majik also had a good score, and a pretty good time considering the video shows him really trying to think if he shot a couple of the targets or not, but that last partially hidden target on the end of the last hard-cover orange-netting barricade was really easy to skip/miss, and that resulted in 2 mikes and an unfortunate drop to an otherwise solid run.
5. Uncle O also skipped/missed that last target, and had to take a couple of extra shots on the Texas Star, but he would have otherwise but right at the top vying for #1.
6. BlamBlam-2Alpha: Boooooooooooring. More 2 Alpha's, clean shoot, no mikes, 3rd highest score of the stage. Blah blah blah. Get the boy some ACME rocket skates and THEN we'll be talkin' a whole different game.
7. Beetle Bailey: solid shoot, one mike, but didn't miss that partially hidden target. Video shows that Beetle Bailey really was sliding around the gravel, and had a lot of back and forth zig-zag movement trying to get all the angles which slowed him down more than probably necessary. Good run though!
8. ABearden also skipped/missed that last target, and just barely clipped a no-shot for an extra -10 pt penalty, and those plates on that star were just not behaving for him, contributing to a slower time than he probaby could have otherwise shot. Solid run.
9. H57 again quietly went about his job. You can set the atomic clock by this guy's even pace/speed because no matter the situation, he's always the same speed.
10. I can't remember what happened to philpan on this stage, but 110 mike penalties doesn't seem right to me. 11 mike and/or no-shoot combo's? Doesn't seem right. I think H57 was messin' with you, my friend.
11. This was one of my favorite stages to watch emilsal shoot. Forget the mikes and/or no-shoots. When he came to that Texas Star, he NEVER GAVE UP!!! Some of those plates he hit THREE and FOUR times before falling off because the retention spring in the back was probably too tight. Meanwhile, the star is spinning like a hypnotist's wheel, and he just keeps aiming and shooting away until, one by one, each plate succumbed to his relentless pressing attack until the star was cleaned. It was awesome. emilsal embodied the shooter's spirit on this day, and represented his Navy service with honor...the man does NOT know the meaning of the word "quit" or "leave it behind". Not in his vocabulary. I love it. (Now, if we can just get you to slow down your double-taps just a bit and make sure that second shot lands on-target, you will be a force to be reckoned with, my friend.)

Lessons Learned: Accuracy, accuracy, accuracy. Make sure to engage all targets (no skipped targets). Shoot that damned star from top down. AND NEVER GIVE UP!

So, hidden in that mass of data is some GREAT and valuable information once you know how to analyze it. A regular tea leaf Davinci code.

And, gee, wouldn't you know, but since no one is allowed to shoot on our squad anymore except me, I WIN!!!

Dude, next time I prance around like that, someone slap me upside the head, eh? Seriously, that was the first time I ever had to run with a gun, and I felt like I was holding a bomb while running around on loose gravel.

Actually, I've been shooting so long at SGVGC, it's hard for me to break out of my static isosceles "NO RAPID FIRE!! ONE SHOT EVERY TWO SECONDS!!" mode of shooting. This whole IPSC thing makes me run AND rapid fire, and it's just plain unnatural for me.

In the back of my mind all day was, "This is my first time, I'm not gonna rush. I'm gonna be safe and slow, scores be damned." I'm surprised I didn't finish last with the stage times I had. I think speed will eventually come with familiarity, though.

Thanks again for hosting our group of newbies, Eyon. It was a great learning experience for everyone, I'm sure.

You know, I think that my speed runs and rapid reloads come from the fact that I was very heavily into airsoft a few years ago, and attended skirmishes almost every weekend.

Of course, airsoft guns aren't exactly real, and you can hide behind a thin piece of plywood to protect yourself from BBs (heh), but the manual of arms is very close to what a real gun is, which is probably what helped me. That and video games.

Next time I go out, I'm going to slow myself down and try for more controlled pairs rather than double taps, so I can get more alphas. I'll also try the "don't shoot until slidelock" routine.

Funnily enough, I noticed that in one of my videos, I only counted 9 rounds until slidelock. Stupid 15 round mags and people talking to me while I'm trying to load each mag must've threw me off. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

That's my fault, totally. When I was keeping score of the "no-shoot" hostages being hit, I used hash marks to keep track of them. It should have been two (2) no shoots, not eleven (11). When I realized the possible confusion, I was gonna go back and check everything, but in all the excitement, I just plain forgot. Sorry, Phil!

Will do. It shoots a bit high, due to the ancient rear sight (lowest setting is 300 meters/400 arshini) but it's a pretty neat rifle. It has six "kill notches" on the side of the stock .

Okay, regardless of who else is gonna show up, I will be there on Sunday, wearing my usual blue "Molon Labe" shirt.

I'm actually more interested in trying the .45 ACP revolver than the AK, since I've shot an AK before, but not a .45 ACP revolver.

As far as the action shooting goes, the only way to get experience with it is to try it. I did terrible last time, but I'm glad I went.
