Should I say anything about an exposed concealed weapon in public?

Earlier tonight my family and I attended a country music concert in a public forum in Georgia. It is illegal in Georgia to carry a concealed weapon to such an event even if you have a CCL. When we arrived at our seats I noticed a rather large, not all fat, gentleman sitting in the row in front of us with a haircut that has become typical of police officers in our area, the old buzz cut to shape the head rather square. When he moved I noticed the bulge of a firearm on his right hip under his thin shirt, worn outside the pants. As I have prior law enforcement experience I tagged him as an LEO. About 2 hours into the show, after observing him consume approximately three large beers, he removed his wallet from his left rear pocket and in so doing completely exposed the concealed weapon. Having already tagged him as probable LEO I chose not to say anything to him. It turns out that when the performer did a salute to soilders, firemena and police officers he was very vocally positive in his response so I am sure he was an LEO.

Any suggessions on how to have handled this situation differently. In the entire time we were at the event I saw not one uniformed officer although there were unarmed security officers.

Must be nice to be able to ignore laws and drink while carrying.......

I wouldn't have said anything because I wouldn't want to deal with the repercussions if he took my comments the wrong way.

NO!!!!!!!!!! I really do not understand why people think they need to tattle on other people espically when they are not bothering you. I think CCW laws are a waste of time and could care less if I see someone with a concealed weapon where they are told not to be of even dring 3 beers. Just me I believe people in this country just can not stand to leave people alone. Do you get the urge to call police everytime someone of the freeway is going 5 miles over the speed limit. How about if you caught them smoking tobacco in a non smoking resturant in the bathroom. Or how about if you saw a fisherman keep one fish that was 1" below the length law.

While I may not break these laws for fear of losing my LTC altogether, I certainly won't assist in enforcing laws I completely disagree with.

There might be certain circumstances where you would let him know his fly was unzipped. Maybe he would appreciate a quiet "Hey buddy, you are printing". with a wink.

Like a slip showing or a zipper down the wearer would probably like to know that something that needs covering is no longer covered. An excuse me friend your weapon is showing should suffice.

Dangerous assumption here.

For all you know, this guy was a wanted felon with a rap sheet a mile long.

Timothy McVeigh would have looked similar (short hair) and probably acted the same way when they paid tribute to the soldiers (which he once was)

If he WAS a LEO and downed "3 large beers", he probably doesn't deserve to be one.

So what's your opinion? Point him out or leave him alone?

I am rather large, not all fat, have my hair cut short and I appreciate the service of our soldiers and lawmen. I am not an LEO, but I do carry concealed.

If my pistol is exposed, please tell me. "Is that a Ruger?" would make me sit up and take notice. "Your cell phone is about to come loose" or some similar benign warning would be good. That's what I would say to the person in question.

I wouldn't report someone for exposing their gun. I wouldn't report them for drinking while carrying. I wouldn't report someone for carrying in a prohibited place. I wouldn't report someone who didn't look like a cop carrying. I wouldn't report anyone peacefully carrying a sidearm under any circumstances.

The way I read the OP, the poster was asking if anyone would have told the (assumed) LEO.

I think that is miles apart from "reporting" or "tattling".

Personally, I would have found a discreet way to let him know, in a nonconfrontational manner, as others have posted.

One drinking "three large beers" while carrying at a concert is not one of my own. However, actively reporting him is a dumb idea, because the press would have a field day with any resulting incident or knowledge of the circumstances and unfairly make carrying a gun look bad. The truth is that he should be free to carry but not to drink significantly while doing so. Unfortunately he represents other gun owners when and if he gets caught.

I am not likely to encounter such a scenario because a) I don't like being around alcohol and b) I avoid circumstances where I will be deprived of carrying a gun. Cap that with most concerts being little but infernal racket.

I would have kept my mouth shut to any authorities. However if he was a LEO it seems wrong tobe drinking and CCWing. Either way I just disagree with a lot of the laws that prohibit CCW in certain places.

I would just

tell him discretley(sp) , "hey your shirt is up over your pistol"...not report him or anything.
I live in NV and in Reno ccw is legal in bars and such...however since I don't drink I don't worry about dui's or being drunk while ccw'ing

Amen brother! The last thing I am going to do is narc on one of my own. We need to support one another, not do stuff like this.

How? He's being peaceful and giving me no reason to think he is a threat.

For all you know, this guy was a wanted felon with a rap sheet a mile long.
For all you know he's a priest, a minister, or a rabbi.

And what would be the significance? Are there more murder bombers with short haircuts than LEOs? Should I assume anyone with a short haircut is going to blow up buildings?

If he WAS a LEO and downed "3 large beers", he probably doesn't deserve to be one.
I had no idea LEOs were forbidden from consuming alchohol.

If that had been me, I would have appreciated you bringing it to my attention.

I would have discretely let him know.

its best not to aproach anyone you think to be armed unless you know them on a personal level ( meaning your able to see thier mother at the store and hold a conversation)

he may be LEO he may be a Strange Ranger ( LEO wanna bes) if you had concern that he may be a threat. id talk to a cop at the event, say you saw a man carrying, who you believe to be a off duty LEO. if need be point him out. and let the police handle it. thats the key to CCW. Let the police handle it unless the S is HTF right infront of you

Well.... was it your problem???

If you open your mouth, it becomes your problem. You kept your yap shut, and it was nobody's problem

OH GOD.....HE'S A CRIMINAL.....HE'S GOT A GUN........waaaaaaaa

Everybody here wants carry laws, then scream like sissies when somebody carries....

all you "right to carry" guys need to go back and read these posts. Sounds like they were typed by Sarah Brady.

I've never really understood the whole thing with LEOs. In most areas, they are required to carry all of the time, even in a bar. With millions of LEOs around the country, you never hear about any incidents. As an officer of the law, they have a higher duty to not get sloppy drunk in public, BUT they also have a right to have a good time off-duty. I think it would be good judgement on their part to leave their piece in the car if they plan to have more than one or two brewskies.

As far as how to handle this particular situation, I would never turn in anyone who didn't look like scum. Maybe that's profiling, but thats life. Dress like scum AND show your weapon, I say someting. Look respectable, I don't. I probably would give the guy a tap on the shoulder and gently let him know it was showing if I saw the gun for more than a few seconds. If I only saw a print, I wouldn't say anything. People on this site probably assume any print is a gun and specifically notice those things in public. The general public probably assumes it is a cell phone and they're probably right most of the time.

1. I've never seen an LEO drink anything other than a sip of wine while carrying. And mind you, 99.9% of LEOs, myself included, really look down on anyone that even takes a sip.

2. That all being said, I probably would have left the area (if I wasn't an LEO).
