Thinking of buying either a Colt .45 series 70 or a Sig P-220. This is an apple and oranges comparison in a way, but as I understand it, the P-220 is no longer made.

Of course the series 70 has not been made for years. I am looking for a "reasonable" investment and something to shoot on a limited basis.

Series 70's in blue are $700-$900, not sure about a LNIB P-220, but I would assume in the $700-$800 range.

Plus they are now making the P220 in a single-action version making the choice a little tougher. I'd pick the P220 in SA personally. :)

I went through this decision. Got the 220 in Stainless. Love it. DA/SA. I have a number of decockers so the DA/SA is OK with me.

Couldn't live without a 1911. I got the Springfield Armory Loaded. Good gun. I needed to do some improvements to get the trigger where I want it. The 220 ran perfect out of the box and is more accurate than the Springfield. That may change with the lighter trigger. Need to shoot it soon.

Of the 2, I'd go w/ the Colt...I just love the 1911 platform for its versatility, & tuneability.
Like my gunsmith says..."there's the 1911 and there's everything else" ;) :D

I carried a 220 for nine years and loved it. Thousands of rounds and it never jammed once. So I lean towards the 220 over the 1911. Also, Sig is now offering more versions of the 220 then ever. However, I did hear that they may have pulled the plug on the 245.

Thanx for the education. I could have swarn I read where the P-220 got the axe. Sorry, and thanx.

I was under the impression the Series 70 was replaced by the Series 80?

The Series 70 almost was gone, but us traditionalist believe that there really wasn't a need for a firing pin block on a proven platform. So, they keep a few around for us.

Of course, there is still the option for those who do, Series 80.

Dobe

+1 to Colt over SIG as I just don't like DA/SA guns. What the model number of the SA version of the SIG P220, or is it some high dollar IPSC type semi-custom gun?

Schmecky, I priced a P220 in stainless a few months ago, in the Beaumont, TX area... ~$820 @ Gander Mountain, and ~$785 from the dealer I've bought all my guns from so far. I'll probably pick up one of those myself, eventually, but first there's the Kimber to finish paying off, and then a Ruger GP-100 .357 Mag that I was gonna pick up right before the deal on the Kimber came along..geesh, so many guns, so little money....:D

If you mean the plain, non-railed classic P220--yes, that's been discontinued. There should still be plenty out there, though, and $700 seems just a bit high in my neck of the woods.

If you want an investment, guns aren't the best bet for that, but the series 70 Colt would fall into that category more than the Sig. (A P210 is a different matter, of course!)

Get the P220 if you want a great shooter and a wonderful sidearm. Get the Colt for historical value. I'm not slighting the Colt as a shooter; it's just that the P220 is more likely to be perfect out-of-the-box.

I think it's just the P220/SAO and it's the same price as the regular P220 from what I can tell. I handled one at the gunshop and the trigger wasn't too bad. :)

I shoot both and love both platforms. But I would choose the P220. I like the decocked carry with the DA first shot option. For me, it was relatively easy to master the transition. And the accuracy OOTB has been as good as any 1911 I've ever shot.

Just get a used 220. I got mine for $425...10 years old and damn near flawless. Not one hiccup either. It's my primary CC gun.

That being said, a nice 1911 is pretty darn sweet and I'd love to have one someday. Just not as a carry weapon.

Posting from the point of view that you'll eventually own both, (I do) it will all depend on price. Pounce on a good example of whatever you see for a reasonable price first. Probably that will be the Sig, but you never know what will turn up. This is going to be about your personal preference in carry guns for a DA first shot vs SA cocked and locked, and what's available locally.
