Sig P-220 or Colt?

I recently bought a P220ST with rail. I have owned and shot 1911s for years.
While no gun is ever going to be 100% reliable after thousands of rounds. My P220 was completely utterly unreliable right out of the box. It jammed 200 times out of the first 250 rounds I fired from it. After several calls to SIG customer service (45 minute wait on the phone on my dime each time), where they kept advising me it would stop jamming after it was Broken In (bULLSHEET). I finally called the president of SIG Ron Cohen and his assistant hooked me up with Chris who is the manager of CS. The gun went back and got a new extractor and other unspecified adjustments. They also gave me a set of new sig lites at no charge on my request (actually it reimbursed me for long distance phone calls and aggravation). The gun has now run perfectly for 300 rounds. It shoots very well indeed and I am begining to get used to the trigger (which is not as good as a 1911 trigger).

I cant recommed the SIG, Buy a 1911. More accurate better reliability, better trigger, better ergonomics and about the same or even lower price.
You can carry the 1911 stock, or have it customized and accurized for competition later on.

Take a look at the Kimber TLE II I have about 4000 flawless rounds out of mine, and it cost less than the SIG. I also have a Kustom Target which has about 11,000 flawless rounds from it. My three colts have also been excellent. The only 1911 I have had a major problem with is a springfield Milspec bought two years ago new. The extractor went south after 2500 rounds. I was able to rebend the extractor and the gun shot fine, until I bought a wilson bulletproof and replaced the springfield extractor.

Take the time and search out each one to handle each or, even better, test shoot each.

They both are good guns. There shouldn't be any issues with either.

One just has to take the time and make the decision for themselves.

The first obvious question is do you want a single or double action trigger?

I'm a 1911 fan, but I must say that SIG did do right by 'ya. Although it took you contacting the president of the company, you were compensated and heard.

Sig makes a very good handgun. I'm sorry you had problems, but I'm glad all is better.

PS.
I agree about that break-in crap. No firearem should have to "break-in" in order to function properly straight from the box.

Dobe

Every 1911 I have owned either required work out of the box or later on down the road. My SA Compact needed a Wilson bulletproof extractor to get it running. It's approaching 15,000 trouble free rounds. I don't even want to talk about my Kimber nightmare. Let's just say they could not get a gun to work for me or stay working. My S&W was a delight until after about 3000 rounds it started tearing off plunger tubes.
Can you get a good 1911?
Yes. Of course! And when you do they are an excellent gun. Great ergo's, great SA trigger, natural pointability, good round. But I've even seen guys have trouble with brand new $2600.00 Nighthawks. For the money it just shouldn't be so! What I'm saying is out of the box alot of 1911's simply don't work. Most can be made to work. Usually without alot of trouble. But for the money it should work out of the box!
Everyone of my Sigs has been 100% right out of the box. Everyone has been a tackdriver. My 220 especially so. Some guns will equal it for accuracy. Damn few will top it. Incuding megabuck 1911's. So I would recommend a Sig if you want something you can takeout of the box, clean it, lube it, and shoot it to your hearts content. If you don't like the trigger reach you can get a short trigger or now a SAO model. If you want a gun you may have to play with to get right get the 1911. Yes you can get a lemon Sig. But they are rare.

Gonna be a toss up I have a colt and have a 220SAO on layaway the sigle action only trigger on the sig is sweet but so is a trigger on a colt

Flip a coil and heads colt /tails sig

Based on my bad experiences with Colt, I'd recommend the Sig 220 SAO version.

I've never had any problems with Sigs...

Been at this a while, and I am about convinced that the gun has to be matched to the man. I know what I can do with a gun I like on a good day so I have a benchmark, if you will.

Picked up a 220 about 1996 and spent a fair amount of time trying to get good with it. Never really got ahead of it as it was a bit big for my hand and the DA, while good for a semiauto, does not compare with a good DA revolver or a good 1911. Wound up giving it to a very good friend who *does* shoot them well.

My 1911 trigger time goes back to 1959. I am admittedly a slow learner, but the things that were difficult for me with the SIG were easy with the 1911. I have a "few", and the current incarnation is a SA Mil-Spec stainless. I like it; it's reliable, has a decent trigger, good sights, and unlike the SIG, it works with me.

If you are with an agency that mandates what you will carry, that's it and you have to improvise, adapt, and overcome. With brief interludes, I had to contend with some of that from 1965-1994. If you are free to choose, "choose wisely".

Then google gunsite and take your chosen partner down for some good times.

I've got too come to SIG's defense. I have owned a .45 caliber West
German P220A since 1988, and have used one extensively as a duty
weapon from that point to May of '97 when I retired. I NEVER as so
much had a bobble, hiicup, stovepipe, stoppage, or any other type
malfunction with a SIG P220A~! I feel as though, its the one
gun that I can trust my life (and the lives of loved ones) too.:D And,
I don't (and won't) hesitate recommending SIG Classic P-series type
weapons to anyone, bar none~!;)

I love my Sig P220ST. It's worked flawlessly since the day I got it. I miss it now that my wife has claimed it as her carry gun.

Another vote for the P220 here. Thousands of trouble free rnds. I have a P220SAO on order and look forward to it as well. Occasional lemons do get out, be it cars, guns, knives, etc. But SIG took care of it for you. Good in my book. My experiences with the 1911 platform aren't anywhere near as good. I was debating on a SIG 1911 or a SW 1911 this year, and when the P220 SAO came about, that solved any doubt in my mind as to what to get!

I have tallied the responses and so far it is:

Colt - 6
Sig - 19

Statistically, this isn't even close. So I am leaning heavily toward the Sig P-220.

Thanx for all the responses.
