The "3-Screw Old Model" Rugers were only to be carried '5-up'...hammer resting on empty chamber, unless they had been retro-fitted by Ruger to the New Model style transfer bar action.

Same with the real SAA Colts and Colt Clones...5-up carry ONLY with the hammer on the empty chamber.
 
I'm not exactly sure we can say how these guns were carried. People did all sorts of things in the mid to late 19th Century that we wouldn't consider to be "best practices" today.

Motivating your employees could involve bullwhips. Trains had no central brake systems. A few railroad workers getting blown up now and then was par for the course.

I do think we can say what is and isn't a good idea, though.:)
