Does anyone know anything about the S&W M&P-15 possibly being illegal in Maryland? I just read a review from guns and ammo mag and it had a note found within the rifle specs saying it was restricted in Maryland. Is this true? Also what are your thought son this rifle? I live in Maryland I am in need of a top notch quality AR-15 for defensive reasons (however I would want this to be a range gun too) because of a very dangerous situation going on in my family right now. I want top notch quality because I need total reliability in case something bad goes down, I don't want to be caught helpless with a failed/useless weapon. I read many reviews about this gun and they all said it was excellent. Could you please clarify on any restrictions on this gun? Also if you think there are better than this what is your idea of top notch? BTW: My price range is under $1500.

P.S. I know Colt is basically the standard but I was told to avoid them by dealers at a gun show because they said they can't be used with parts from other manufacturers because of minor things such as the connection pins for the upper and lower which are different compared to all other manufacturers (meaning you can only pair together a Colt upper and lower, no mixing with other brands). He said Colt did this to ensure you can only use their parts thus restricting modularity and competition. Is this true or is it typical salesman bullcrap?

Thank you for your help.

It is NOT illegal. When they say "restricted" they may be referring to the regulated long gun list, which includes AR15s and clones. By "regulated" it means that they have to be purchased like a handgun and are subject to the 7 day waiting period.

The only exception from this, according to the law, is the Colt with an HBAR stamped lower. That opens up another can of worms because there has been great latitude taken in what constitutes "HBAR" regardless of whether it's a Colt or not. I think the logic was that if clones of non-HBARs are treated like regulated firearms, then the HBAR clones should be non-regulated...meaning cash and carry.

Let us know where you are in MD and maybe we can help you with a transfer dealer. Gideon is good by all accounts, but if you are an hour or two away it quickly cuts into any savings if you have to make two trips out there.

I am in Carroll county. I won't be buy to soon as I must save up some money. However once I do which should be soon, my price range will be 1,000-1,500. However do you think this is a good gun such as colt would be?

I don't know about the SW specifically, but I think it's priced a little high compared to other quality ARs. I favor Rock Rivers personally for off the shelf guns, but I also have a mostly Colt target gun that's really nice.

If you're in Carroll, give the guys at White Marsh Arms a call. They're in Reisterstown.

A couple of guys from their sister store, Continental Arms, are members on MDShooters and might be able to give you a quote.
