I was thinking about that other thread about eating dog food, and how people were saying you should just eat the dog instead.

Well when would be the appropriate time to starting eating dogs and cats?

Should it only be done as a last resort once you start running low on food yourself?

Or should you start right away and conserve your food for later?

In my mind the biggest problem of eating stray animals is probably disease?

However if you wait till long after whatever SHTF situation happened there will be fewer animals left alive and those that are probably wont be nearly as healthy as when the situation first started.

People worry too much about food and not enough about clean water. Most people, including me, would be healthier if they skipped meals for a few days, but if you have no water for three days you will be pretty much non-functional.

But to answer your question, I would dine on dog when it became obvious that the disaster was widespread enough that the recovery would take years.

But if you like the taste start now

Lewis and Clark preferred dog meat over Salmon... any day.
My water purification system would keep me going indefinately so I'd probably kill your dog after a week. My dog is trained for protection so he'd go to stew after a month and a half.

Dogs?Nope.

Eat your neighbors.Dogs can't steal from you(no thumbs!!).

Might want to lay in a supply of sweet'n'sour source for the "long pork".

My question is.....When you eat dog, does you stomach growl before or after you eat?

When is it time to eat them? When you get hungry. I spent a couple of years working in Asia, I'm sure I've eaten dog. Lived in Europe for awhile - horse meat is common in the butcher shops. I used to eat in a Chinese place near Stanford when I was in school that got shut down for serving cat. Nothing wrong with any of them.

I would wait 2-3 weeks after the owner last had contact. Some of the meds given for parasites take that long to get out of the system. You wait a couple of weeks after that last dose you should be OK :D

In my younger days, I went to a Chinese restraunt and ate two complete dinners and six egg rolls (wasn't a pound overweight, but that is a different topic).
The next morning my dad was reading the paper and said out loud, "Oh look here, that Chinese restrant got shut down last night after they discovered cat carcasses in their dumpster."

I didn't see anything unusual about the taste.

i say you eat your neighbor's dog and stray animals right away. heck, why wait for the s to htf to get rid of that annoyin, yapping rat? as for your own pets, i depends on their utility. if the cat is a decent sort who isn't above controlling the vermin, let him live, if it's a Democrat that has never been outside a house, eat the sucker. remember, butter spoils fast so use it up. same for the dog. my friend has an ab that routinely brings back rabbit on its own when we're out camping, that kind of animal deserves to live. if it's a tiny little sucker, it's more likely to be on the menu but don't jump the gun. even the little suckers are good burglar alamrs.

now i have something to tell those folks that say pinpoint accuracy isn't important in shtf. picture this: you want to eat your neighbor's poodle but you don't want to risk being bitten and you don't want to ruin the meat. add in the fact that the little bastard won't let you get closer than 50 yards and you don't want to let the jbts know where you are by firing multiple shots. so you need to hit a one to two inch circle at fifty yards. that translates to two to four moa. aha! see - you do need an accurate rifle when the shtf.

Sorry, but it would have to be dire for me to contemplate eating any dog I know; I care a lot more about most dogs than I do about most people.

Cats, OTOH... :D

Even then, I'm not sure eating strays is such a hot idea-since dogs and cats are omnivores, along with any interesting garbage and tasty fecal matter that comes along, it would not seem safe at all.

But, then, there are Chows...

Man…there isn’t an animal out there that isn’t a filthy disgusting creature. Cows eat grass smothered in poo, pigs and chickens will eat *anything*--including pig and chicken (which is a might disturbin’ if you ask me), and fish swim in and breathe their own waste--no problem. Catfish eat whatever falls to the bottom, as do crab, shellfish and crawfish.

A buddy of mine who is vegetarian was neauseated when I told him about how many animals died for his tofu. Rats, rabbits, squirrels, prairiedogs, coyotes, all sorts of animals hide in fields and then get crushed or swept up in the harvesting machinery. Bunny rabbits SCREAM when they are killed for their skins or their meat.

Living is nasty business. Plain and simple.

Me, I like a rare steak. Mmmm Mmmm Good!

My next-door neighbor has three small yappy mutts who are constant barkers. Now I understand why people want suppressed .22s. Do I have to wait for the S to HTF?

(By the way, this is one of the funniest threads in recent memory on THR.)

Chihuahua Kebobs
3 chihuahuas cut into 2" chunks
2 bunches of green onions (medium sized)
Cherry tomatoes (about 2 doz)
Mushrooms (about 2 doz)
3 bell peppers 1 red, 1 yellow, 1 green

Cut the yappers into cubes and slice the peppers. Clean and remove tops of the green onions.

Place a cube of the now quiet meat, onion, tomato, mushroom, yellow pepper on the skewer and then place another piece of meat, onion, tomato, mushroom, red pepper on the same skewer, then repeat process again ending with the green pepper this time. If you want you can also add a slice of an apple or potato in place of a tomato.

Kids also like to add some pineapple to the skewers in place of the mushrooms. Make sure you use some good sized chunks of pineapple.

Cook over BBQ grill till meat is brown and veggies are tender.

Many of the small-breed dogs were engineered as fresh-meat on feet. Probably have a better eatable mass to effort ratio than cats anyway.

Besides, the cats have a purpose. They'll help keep the rats out of your leftovers.

Either way, not a big problem around here, horse is too easy to locate. Why mess with one meal when you can lay up enough for a small group for a week?

This thread made me hungry, so I ate my goldfish.

Hmm... eating the pets when things go bad? Makes me wish I had some pet cows.

In a SHTF situation, you will probably have to find wild veggies.... You want to be careful you do not poison yourself with a bad mushroom.
