MGs in aiurcraft
You'd be suprised at all the different ways that MGs were mounted in Aircraft, a lot of it was simply "figured out" as they were mounting it at the aircrafts base during the war.. for several years it was really a hodge podge of differing ways to get the extra firepower into the aircraft, especially the slower more vunerable twin engine bombers. THe extra 50 mounts were used on the B-25s as well as the B/A 26 Douglas invader (most noteably during Korea), The A 20 Havoc, the B 26 Maurader.. etcetcetcetc...
My old partner from the mid 80's was the grandson of Hap Arnold, and even though I knew a lot of aviation people for years before this, I met a LOT of people through my partner.. including many US pilots/aces, German (yes I knew Dolfo Galland and Gunter Rau.. etc).. and Brits.
Actually the most facinating were the Germans, closely followed by the Americans, because they always had great stories of Americans being Americans!! And sorting all the stuff out on the fly.. getting it mounted etc etc
Anyway, got a ton of old books and mags on this stuff, aside from what I know... yep, I"ve pulled M3s out of the wings of "retired" WWII aircrfaft from South of the border... especially P47s... Built my favorite M2 from an old rusted M3...
Loved the fact that I didn't have to pay for the ammo!!
