Suicide a reason not to allow people to carry firearms?

I was in a discussion with one of my roommates this evening and he was quite against firearms, especially concealed firearm permits, unless they're used for sport.

This is a values question (suicide is bad); the gun opinion is just an offshoot from that.

The fact part of it is that people who are suicidal don't care if a gun is intended to be used for sport or not. Are you going to print a stern warning on the gun "For sport only! Not to be used for suicide!"? His position would make more sense if he or she was opposed to any availability of firearms.

You can argue the values based portion of the opinion, but people don't tend to reason well on matters of taste--see alt.religion.
