Just checked out the USA Today article on the Marine sniper rifle, which it says is a customized rifle assembled by the Corps. Does anyone know what platform it's based on?

Yes, I saw that article. Finally, the press has something positive to say about the military.

The M24 SWS is the main one still out in the field for the Army. Don't know what the Marines are using. Recently, late 2010, DoD approved an upgrade to XM2010 (using 300win) and the new ones are slowly being fielded.

This is could be the reason why we are seeing the M118LR ammo available in multiple places in the open market. Just a guess.

During the Vietnam War, the Marine Corps decided they needed a standard sniper rifle. After testing several possibilities, they ordered 700 Remington Model 40x rifles (target/varmint version of the Model 700 bolt-action rifle), and gave them the M40 designation. Most had a Redfield 3–9 power Accurange variable scope mounted.

Yes, but Unertl has been out of business for a while now. They use Schmidt and Bender now

We started using Unertl 10X in the early eighties. I used one on a M40A1 82-84. I believe they stayed in service through the nineties and on, when US Optics began rebuilds. If my memory serves me, the original M40 had Winchester trigger groups. Believe me, current Marine Corps Scout Snipers are the best trained and motivated fighters in the field. The Marine Corps is providing excellent equipment at the time it is needed most. IMO...
