The RUGER OLD ARMY Club

i have a chance to buy several OAR,s, new in the grey plastic boxs with all papers. blue 7,5" barrels agj sights 650.00 and SS 7.5" barrels adj 750.00 sights. should i buy them.

There is an ROA on Gunbroker right now with 2 hrs to go, Stainless, supposedly NIB from 1981 at $1400 and counting so $750 is apparently a fair price

Here is a pic of my Ruger Old Army. My father-in-law purchased it in 1977. When he passed away, my mother-in-law handed it down to me. It's been a safe queen for a few years and I am trying to get back into BP. I have a 1890 Springfield Trapdoor, an original Spencer 56-56 carbine (converted to center fire), an original 1863 Springfield rifled musket, a replica 1858 Remington, a 2nd Gen. Colt 1860 shooter and a replica 1860. I'm trying to find a light load for the Trapdoor due to 74 year old shoulder that want to argue with me. Plenty of Goex fff and caps for the revolvers and some APP 3f that I haven't tried yet. Hope I'm welcome to the club.

Welcome 54 Dodge! :D

I have two ROA, an older blued version from the 70s, which suffers from mangled screw heads and chipped finish around screw holes(my early attempts at gunsmithing with the wrong size screw driver). It was a blast to shoot, 30 grains of 3F, a Speer .457 swaged round ball, a finger full of Crisco, capped with a Remington #10, went bang. Much fun even the boiling water and Dawn, seemed to add to the joy.
The second one is a recently acquired stainless, unfired and in the plastic case with all papers and instruction booklet.
I do have a question for the membership. Was the nipple wrench in stainless? Or did they include a blued one?
Either way I need to find another nipple wrench.
Thank you and have a nice day.

Here’s a photo of my SS Old Army. Picked it up brand new in the box a couple years ago. Serial number dates it to 1979. I recently replaced the nipples as I was getting a few hang/misfires & need to get it back out to the range to see if they make a difference or if was a percussion cap issue. Here’s the original photo & one with the Hogue grips that fit my hand much better.

I apologize to the membership for my ignorance, why are so many converting percussion ROA revolvers to fire fixed metallic cartridges? What is the advantage of this endeavor? If on wishes a 45 Long Colt revolver there are many on the market from Ruger, Colt, and the Italians.

The main advantage is that the gun becomes a convertible centefire for less than the price of a 2nd gun.
Another benefit that some folk like is that the converted gun doesn't need to be registered with the gov't.
And in a way, adding the conversion cylinder allows folks to mimic the actual historically correct conversions available for original C&B models of their time period.

How would one go about registering their weapon with the government? I have never done that and have no idea how it would be possible.

Furthermore,
Any modifications to a black powder pistol to make it a modern weapon would immediately subject to any and all laws concerning modern weapons. Even if you build your own from scratch it is subject to modern weapon laws so I don't see the benefit to converting one myself unless you just want the look of the BP revolver.

Wow! How'd I miss this!!
Constrictor, maybe you should read the law first?

I know perfectly well it’s legal to make your own firearms and pointed that out above. I said once you have a “modern weapon” it’s subject to the same laws as one not made by you. Meaning if your a prohibited person you still can’t posses a converted weapon and so on.
Perhaps if you read my post slower?

Then what's the point of your original post? You obviously know how to "register your firearm" !!!!

Mike
The point of my original post is to dispute the notion that if you modify a black powder weapon into a modern weapon the same laws don't apply because they do. I also commented on registering your firearm with the federal government because no registration like that exists making it impossible to register your firearm with the federal government.

well i bought them, seven in all. four blue in the boxs with paper work, one ss new in the box with papers and a new blue in the box without papers and ss fired in a box with no papers. not cheap, but worth it to me.
