JIM-WEST PA's nice BRASS GRIP-FRAME ROA. Thats a nice example of an early ROA. They go for big bucks nowadays. That looks like a keeper. Hold on to that. All the best..........Joe

Thanks. It's older than I thought. The seller thinks it's from 1995. Serial #148-02233, which is fairly early for this variant.

Yeah, small fortune is definitely a relative term when discussing ROA prices. Mine cost me $450.00+shipping+a reasonable finders/handling fee to Phil.
It made my wallet $500.00 lighter, to get it, but I'm very pleased with the transaction and the gun.
Then, there's the aftermarket grips I paid a chunk for.
I'm not complaining. Two of my precharged pneumatic air rifles cost me about that much, each.
My Howdah pistol cost me more than that.

Buying a Ruger Old Army at ANY PRICE (within reason) is a NO BRAINER. I can not even begin to think of any other pistol that gives the owner such pleasure in handling, quality of material used, sturdiness beyond compare, out of the box accuracy, a highly polished tool in its execution, a marvel of engineering even by todays standards, mixing the best of the old and the new, a masterpiece for all time and the ability to hold its price no matter what condition it's in, is simply amazing! Now that is the mark of a great gun. Time simply stops when you handle the Old Army for a few minutes.
Yes, we all know THAT. The only other pistol that comes to mind is the original Colt 1911 .45 acp of any configuration (only the ones built by Colt, period.) With the right load and if you do your part too, as a hunting revolver it is capable of putting down anything that walks on four legs in the 48 States. Now isn't that something! It is a treasure you would not be ashamed to hand down to your kids or grandchildren when the time comes. The very best regards to all the new members. You are todays custodians of a great pistol!

My father had told me to hold off on purchasing a C & B as he had an opportunity to get me one (used of course) at a good deal. When I had talked to him he only mentioned 1860 New Army, which I wasn't fond of using as a hunting platform/sidearm. So I was really looking to buy a new Walker or Dragoon.
You might press the issue with him, Cabela's has new Pietta 1860 blued revolvers for $180 (and $5 shipping w/code-check this site for promo code) which is really hard to beat for a new C&B gun if you can afford to be less than picky about model/variation- ect. through Father's day? I think.
I know I'd rather have new than someone else's neglected?? unless the price is REALLY hard to pass up.

The Colt type is 1860 ARMY. The Remington type is 1858 NEW ARMY. It is unclear which one you are referring to.

Not really the 1860 pretty much makes it the Colt.

My understanding is that Ruger made a much better gun than Uberti or Pietta. That being the case I'd rather have a used Old Army than a new Italian repro as long as it's in good condition.
Anything I can do/have done to quiet the cocking sounds a bit? It's so loud I'd have to hunt old deaf deer to be remotely successful!

Well, no, actually.
Deer have a two-event fright trigger. The first alarm event (sound, smell or sight) causes them to stop and look/listen/smell for danger; the second alarm event will cause them to bolt. If cocking the gun is the first alert event you should have no problem. All that means is that you will need to be stealthy so that cocking the gun is the first indication of danger they sense.
I was advised to pull the trigger back while I cocked it, which negated the sound at half cock (loudest) and reduced the other noises. But I'm not so comfy doing that with a loaded chamber.
Typically I've hunted from a blind in which case I could put it under my jacket to cock it. But I also use tree blinds and stalk if the lease is empty on a portion.

rodwha: if you're right handed, pull on the trigger all the way (right index finger) and cock the piece with your left hand thumb slowly and slowly let off your pressure on the trigger to engage the sear. Always worked for me. Learned this from watching videos of revolver hunters in Africa. Talk about Cape Buffalo hearing a "CLICK" 50 yards away!! Get a Ruger Old Army instead, you will never regret it. A good used ROA is ten times better than any brand new Italian clone! All the best to you.
