Thickening thin grips

I've been shopping for a 22 pistol and the one I like the best has all the best features except for the grips. I have large hands and the grips on this gun are just too thin. Replacement wood grips are thicker, but are way too expensive. I'm thinking of customizing the grips by "shaping" them with hockey tape and then covering them with a grip tape. Has anyone done this before and have a grip tape to recommend? Or is there a slip on grip that fits anything out there?
Any other ideas on how to make the grips fit my large hands?

I used guerrilla tape.
A like the texture, grip tape I bought at Home Depot worked well..but it turned my whole side, my hand, and my gun black when the humidity made the "grip" coating melt. After awhile it had no grip left to it.

Yes they are, but if you're willing to cover your stock grips with Duck Tape, why not consider a pair of Hogue or Pachmyer grips for around $20:confused:

Depending on the type of handgun you have, you could get an 1/8 inch slab of wood, micarta, plastic or even leather. Trace the profile of grip onto the material, cut it out and then place your spacers between the grip and frame. A pair of those would make your grip a 1/4 inch thicker.

Just my thought, others will vary

Before you go all ghetto on the fix try making up some shims that fit under the existing grips. Spacing them out by as little as 1/32 of an inch can make a huge feel in how it fits your hand.

I have the same problem with my CZ 97b. The stock wood grips don't have the wonderful palmswell of the 75's, and the Hogue fingergroove is just as flat.

Aftermarket grips are absurdly expensive.

Back in the day, a lot of guys made target grips by globbing Bondo Auto Body filler on the stock grips and then holding the gun until it set up.

Once hardened, finish sanding and spray paint made them half way presentable.

And they for sure fit your hand.
