I doubt this is the right arena, but I just felt I had to share this. I apologize, in advance, to the moderator who has to clean this up.

We were discussing the Holocaust today and I asked the question: "Could this happen in America?" One of my students of color responded: "Yes, but it would be the white people getting killed."

This is a 17 yr old 11th grader. No, I'm not making this up.

My immediate response was "And that's why we're not giving up our guns."

I'm still in shock over this.

Putting your student's short-sightedness and identity politics aside. . . you are exactly right.

And any more would be off-topic, so I'll stop.

I might hopefully offer that those who would believe such predictions have not yet
calibrated the managed violence of which the Deplorables might be capable.
...at least not for a few generations yet.

At the same time I'm not so foolishly naive to take a hard stand that "...it couldn't happen here."

My only concern is that what can happen is beyond what conventional civilian weapons can combat. If the forces of evil choose to go after the civilians with aircraft then even those of us here who would do our best would be essentially peeing on a forest fire. We dont have surface to air weapon systems, and the best we could hope for is a good shot to take down a single aircraft. But then there is other things we could do little against, no civilian weapon will touch a navy vessel. Our only hope would be that those receiving the orders would refuse and would stand with the civilians. Just like in the American Revolution, the War of Northern Agression, and to some extent the other wars fought in North America, trained, skilled men would have to make a moral decision to be a deserter and fight for the cause he believes is by commandeering the weapons at his post. Hopefully his buddies make the same decision.

Thankfully, I don't think we are at that point yet, but if we don't find a way to bridge the cultural gap that we are seeing then we may quickly grow closer.

Do you know what asymmetric warfare is?
